WinRAR cannot reset or reveal the password of an encrypted RAR archive. If the password is lost, the most useful starting points are the person who created it, your saved passwords or an unencrypted copy of the original files.
Try these checks first
- Look at the original download page, email or message that supplied the archive. The password may have been sent separately.
- Ask the sender for the password or a replacement copy through your usual contact method.
- Check your own password manager and notes.
- If copying a password, avoid accidental leading/trailing spaces and confirm capitalization and keyboard layout.
- If you created the archive, look for the original files or a backup rather than trying to decrypt the only copy.
WinRAR’s password-recovery FAQ explains that its encryption does not have a password-recovery backdoor. Buying a WinRAR licence, changing the filename or opening the archive in another decompressor does not remove encryption.
Is it a password error or a damaged file?

An error message alone may not tell you whether the file is damaged or the password is wrong. Keep the original archive and try a fresh download from the genuine source, if available.
A recovery record does not recover a password
RAR recovery records can help with certain forms of archive damage when the required recovery data exists. They do not reconstruct an unknown encryption password. Repairing the archive and decrypting it are separate tasks.
What about password-recovery utilities?
Such tools generally try candidate passwords; they do not guarantee success. A long, unpredictable password can make that approach impractical. Use only files you are authorized to access, and do not upload a private archive to an unknown “instant unlock” website.
For future archives, keep the password in a password manager and maintain backups of important original files. When sharing with another person, confirm they have both the file and the intended password before deleting your own copy.
