To remove a simple background in GIMP, add an alpha channel, select the background and delete it. For a busy photo, select the subject and use a layer mask so you can correct the edges. Export as PNG or WebP if you want to keep transparency; JPEG does not preserve a transparent background.

Prepare a copy before editing
Open the image, keep the original file and save your working project as XCF. Select the correct image layer. Choose Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel. If the command is unavailable because an alpha channel already exists, you do not need to add another.
The checkerboard shown behind an image represents transparency inside GIMP. It is not a pattern that you need to paint onto your picture. GIMP’s transparency guide explains the alpha channel and export workflow.
Remove a plain background with Fuzzy Select
- Choose Tools > Selection Tools > Fuzzy Select, or press U.
- Click the background, not the subject you want to keep.
- Adjust the threshold until the intended background is selected without swallowing the subject’s edges.
- Add separate background areas to the selection as needed.
- Press Delete, then Select > None and inspect the edges.
Undo if the wrong part disappears. The Fuzzy Select documentation explains why the starting pixel and threshold affect the result. This method works best when background colors are fairly consistent.
Use a layer mask for a complicated photo
For hair, a detailed outline or a background with similar colors, use a more careful selection tool such as Foreground Select or Paths. GIMP documents Foreground Select for separating a subject from its background.
Once you have a selection of the subject, add a layer mask using that selection. Paint on the mask to refine it: black hides areas and white restores them. Make sure the mask thumbnail is selected when refining the mask, so you are not painting directly onto the photo.
Why did Delete make the background white?

Export the finished cutout
Keep the XCF project with its layers, then use File > Export As to make a PNG or WebP. Reopen the exported file and check it over a colored background. A white viewing window alone does not prove the file lost transparency.
