How to Change Your Mac Wallpaper and Fix a Stuck Background

Set a wallpaper from Mac settings

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Wallpaper.
  2. Select a picture, color or other background offered by your Mac.
  3. To use a personal image, choose the option to add a photo or folder.
  4. Choose the image and check how it fills the screen.

Apple’s Wallpaper settings guide explains the controls in current macOS. Some backgrounds need to download first, so allow the download to finish before assuming the selection failed.

Use your own image

Save the picture somewhere reliable on the Mac rather than a temporary download location or a removable drive you usually disconnect. You can also use a photo through the options offered in Photos or Wallpaper settings.

The background is a display choice, not an edit to the original photo. A wide picture with enough resolution usually needs less cropping than a small portrait image. If you want to prepare a cutout or composite first, see our GIMP background-removal guide.

Fix common wallpaper problems

Problem What to check
The picture is cropped Try the fit or fill options offered for that image, or choose a wider picture.
The picture looks blurry Use a higher-resolution original rather than a small preview.
The background changes later Check shuffle, rotation, dynamic and Light/Dark options.
The chosen file disappears Move it to a permanent local folder and choose it again.
A work Mac refuses the change Check whether your organization manages the background.

A dynamic wallpaper can change with time or appearance settings. That can be intentional, rather than another app replacing your choice.

Set backgrounds for multiple displays

Connect the displays first, then review Wallpaper settings for the screen you want to change. Use the option to share a background across displays or Spaces only if that is what you want. The available labels can vary with macOS and the selected wallpaper type.

If you use a phone or tablet as an extra display, our spacedesk guide explains the separate driver/viewer setup and current platform limits. The display arrangement and wallpaper choice are different settings.

Wallpaper versus screen saver

The wallpaper is the desktop background. A screen saver appears when the Mac is not in active use. Some Apple backgrounds offer coordinated screen-saver options, but selecting one does not mean every screen-saver or lock-screen behavior changes in the same way.

Use Apple’s wallpaper customization guide for the controls on your version. If a change still will not stick, try a simple local picture, restart the Mac and check again before deleting settings files.
