iPhone and iPad Music Players for MP3, FLAC and Local Files

Updated on

VLC and foobar2000 are free apps for playing your own MP3 or FLAC files on iPhone and iPad. Evermusic is another option for music kept in the cloud or on a network, with some paid features. Check your iOS version, file types and how you will copy the music into the app. Downloads inside a streaming app work differently.

Music and audio playback on an iPhone
A local music player needs access to the actual audio files, not just a streaming-service playlist.

We checked these App Store requirements on November 2, 2026. An update can change them, and you may not be offered an older version for an old device. We checked the listed support and import options, rather than testing playback on every iPhone or iPad.

How to import MP3 and FLAC files

  1. Put a small set of files in the Files app or a supported cloud/network location. Include one example of each format you plan to use.
  2. In the player, use its import, open-file or local-files option to select them. Where supported, Files > Share can send a file to the player.
  3. Check whether the app copied the file into its library or is reading the original location. Moving or deleting that original can affect access.
  4. Play a complete track and check its title, artist, artwork and seeking. A file extension alone does not prove that every encoding inside it is supported.
  5. For offline listening, download or copy the actual files onto the device, then check playback without the cloud or network connection.

VideoLAN explains how to copy files into VLC, including over Wi-Fi. Put both devices on the same trusted network and use the address shown in your app. Other players may use different menus or addresses.

Music on your device, in the cloud or on a NAS

VLC is useful if you want a free player with several ways to add files. foobar2000 focuses on music, with gapless playback and ReplayGain to help keep volume levels consistent. It needs a much newer iOS version than VLC, so check before choosing it for an old iPad.

Look at Evermusic if you keep music in cloud storage or on a network drive. Its help pages explain local files, cloud accounts and paid features. Check the price of the feature you need inside the app. A free download does not unlock everything.

A file shown in the Files app may still need to download from the cloud. Music on a network drive also needs a connection unless you have saved a copy on your device. Our wireless-storage comparison explains the different drive options.

Check file formats and streaming limits

Check the player’s full format list for your files. MP3, FLAC and WAV are common choices. An M4A file can contain AAC or ALAC audio, so the extension alone does not tell you everything. The file’s audio settings, tags and your connected speakers or headphones can also affect playback.

Apple Music and Spotify subscription downloads are not ordinary MP3 or FLAC files. They usually need the service’s own supported apps. Evermusic also says you cannot import protected Apple Music subscription tracks as normal files. Our Spotify offline-listening guide explains the difference.

Common questions

Can an iPhone play MP3 files without an Apple Music subscription?

Yes. A suitable player can play MP3 files you own and copy into it. You do not need an Apple Music subscription for those files.

Which player is suitable for an older iPad?

Check the app’s current iPadOS requirement. The listings checked here require 9.0 for VLC, 15.5 for Evermusic and 18.6 for foobar2000. Your device’s App Store will show what you can install.

Does a lossless file guarantee lossless sound through Bluetooth?

No. Bluetooth and your headphones have their own limits. Playing a lossless file does not guarantee that the sound stays lossless all the way to your ears.

Why does a downloaded track stop working offline?

Check that you saved the audio itself on your device, not just an entry in the library. Also check whether it is a normal audio file or a protected download tied to a streaming service.
