Updated on November 4, 2026: This guide now covers Windows 11, current Microsoft troubleshooting steps, and recent user reports of OneDrive pausing when games or browsers open.

If OneDrive keeps pausing, open its cloud icon beside the Windows clock and read the message first. A battery or network preference can stop syncing on purpose. A red error icon, a full account, or a file stuck in the queue needs a different fix.
Start with Resume syncing, then check the pause preferences. If opening a game or browser immediately pauses it again, use the separate test below. Resetting OneDrive is a later step, after you have checked the simpler causes.
What is OneDrive actually showing?
Microsoft’s guide to OneDrive status icons helps separate a pause from an upload error.
| What you see | What to check first |
|---|---|
| A pause symbol on the cloud icon | Open the icon, resume syncing, and review automatic pause preferences. |
| “Processing changes” or moving sync arrows | Check the activity list. An open file, a large upload, or a long queue may still be processing. |
| A red circle with a white cross | Open the cloud icon and follow the specific file or account error shown. |
| A gray cloud or a sign-in request | Finish setup or sign in to the correct account. |
| A blue cloud beside a file in File Explorer | The file is online-only. This symbol alone does not mean syncing has failed. |
1. Resume syncing and check why it paused
- Select the OneDrive cloud in the notification area. If it is hidden, open the arrow beside the clock.
- Choose Resume syncing, or select the pause message in the activity window.
- Open the gear menu, then Settings → Sync and back up → Preferences.
- Review the options that pause syncing during battery saver or on a metered connection.
Microsoft documents manual pauses of 2, 8, or 24 hours, plus automatic pauses for battery saver and metered networks. A desktop PC can still be using a metered connection, so being plugged in does not rule out every normal pause condition.
Change a pause preference only if you want OneDrive to keep transferring files in that situation. Syncing on a hotspot can use your data allowance; syncing during battery saver can use more power. For the current settings layout, see Microsoft’s OneDrive settings guide.
If you have personal and work accounts, check the cloud icon for the affected account. Their settings are separate, and some work settings are controlled by your organization.
Cannot find the cloud at all? Search for OneDrive from Start and open the desktop app. You can also follow our guide to showing and hiding Windows taskbar icons to check the notification area.
2. Does it pause when you open a game or browser?
Recent Microsoft Q&A threads include users asking why OneDrive pauses while a game is running, even with battery and metered-network pauses disabled. Another discussion about repeated pausing includes browser-related reports and comments through November 3.
These are user reports, rather than proof of one cause affecting every PC. Some users say turning off Windows Game Mode helped; others say it did not. The reports do not establish a single update to uninstall or a OneDrive version that fixes every case.
If your pause clearly follows the same app opening, try one reversible test:
- Close the game or browser, resume OneDrive, and check whether an upload completes.
- For a game-related trigger, open Windows Settings → Gaming → Game Mode and temporarily turn Game Mode off.
- Open the same game again and watch the OneDrive status.
- If the result does not change, restore your original Game Mode setting.
Treat this as a test, not a guaranteed fix. If pausing continues, record the triggering app, the exact OneDrive message, your Windows build, and the OneDrive version under Settings → About. Include those details in Windows Feedback Hub or a Microsoft support request.
3. Check the account, storage, and affected files
Open OneDrive in a web browser and sign in to the same account shown in the Windows sync app. Check whether your latest files are there and whether the account needs attention. Website access confirms you can reach the service; it does not by itself confirm that the desktop app is uploading.
- Cloud storage: A full account can block new uploads and syncing. Our guide explains how to check your available OneDrive storage.
- PC storage: Check that the drive holding your OneDrive folder has room for downloads. Cloud space and local disk space are different.
- Open files: Save your work and close a file that remains stuck. Give a large upload or a newly added batch time to finish.
- File errors: Use the filename in the error message. If OneDrive flags an unsupported name or a long path, rename that item or shorten its folder path.
- Missing folders: Check OneDrive Settings → Account → Choose folders. Microsoft explains which folders appear on each computer.
Microsoft lists open files, large files, and long queues among the reasons for OneDrive staying on “Processing changes.” Check the queue before assuming it has stopped.
Also, OneDrive does not have a general limit of 2,500 synced files. That number refers to copying files at once on the OneDrive website. For a specific file or library error, consult Microsoft’s current restrictions and limitations.
4. Restart and update the sync app
Save your work, close OneDrive from its cloud-icon menu, and open it again from Start. Restart Windows if the app remains unresponsive. Install available Windows updates and check the release information linked from OneDrive Settings → About.
Make sure you are troubleshooting Microsoft OneDrive, the desktop sync app. Microsoft distinguishes it from the Microsoft Store viewer in its OneDrive app guide. Resetting a viewer app is not the same as resetting the program that syncs your Windows folders.
5. Reset OneDrive if the earlier checks do not help
Before changing the sync setup, save open work and copy important files that have not uploaded to a folder outside OneDrive. Leave the existing OneDrive folder in place.
Microsoft says resetting OneDrive does not delete your files. It does reset settings, disconnect sync connections, and cause a full sync check afterward. You may need to choose your synced folders again.
- Press Windows + R.
- Paste this command and press Enter:
"%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe" /reset
If Windows cannot find that app location, try the following location:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe" /reset
If that location is also missing, try:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe" /reset
These are alternative install locations. Once a command runs successfully, do not run the others. Open OneDrive from Start afterward and allow the sync check to finish. Review any sign-in or folder-selection prompts.
Microsoft also provides an unlink-and-relink procedure for persistent connection problems. Use it as a separate troubleshooting option; you do not need to reset and relink repeatedly.
6. Confirm that syncing works again
- Create a small text file with a unique name inside the affected OneDrive folder.
- Wait for OneDrive to finish syncing.
- Open the same account on the OneDrive website and check that the new file and its contents are present.
- If a game or browser triggered the pause, repeat that action and check again.
This test checks a real upload. An “up to date” message is not enough if you are looking at the wrong account or saving outside the synced folder.
Frequently asked questions
Why does OneDrive keep pausing on a desktop PC?
Check metered-network settings and manual pauses as well as battery-related preferences. If none explains it, watch whether a particular app triggers the pause and follow the steps above.
Can Windows Game Mode make OneDrive pause?
Some recent users report that connection, and some say turning Game Mode off helps. Others still have the problem. A temporary test can help identify a pattern on your PC, but it is not a confirmed universal fix.
Will resetting OneDrive delete my files?
Microsoft says a reset does not delete files or data. It resets sync settings and connections, then checks files again. Keep a separate copy of important files that have not uploaded before changing the setup.
Does a blue cloud beside a file mean it failed to sync?
No. In File Explorer, a blue cloud means the file is online-only. You need an internet connection to open it. Read the cloud icon beside the Windows clock for the account’s sync status.
Can full OneDrive storage stop uploads?
Yes. Check the storage warning and your account’s available space. Also check local disk space if downloads are failing.
Is 2,500 files the OneDrive sync limit?
No. Microsoft uses that figure for a batch-copy limit on the website. Sync limits and performance guidance are separate and depend on the operation and setup.
What should I send Microsoft if pausing continues?
Include the exact status message, your Windows build, the OneDrive app version, the affected account type, and steps that reproduce the pause. Say which checks you tried and whether a test file reached the website.
