You usually do not need a separate app to read a QR code on an iPhone. Camera and the Control Center code scanner cover ordinary links, tickets and other supported QR content. A dedicated reader is useful when you need features such as scan history or creating codes.
Scan with Camera
- Open Camera and select Photo mode.
- Keep the QR code inside the frame and hold still. Move back if the camera cannot focus.
- Tap the link or action that appears after the code is recognized.
You do not need to take a photo. If nothing appears, check the QR scanning option in Camera settings, improve the lighting and make sure the whole code, including its surrounding blank space, is visible.
Use the Control Center scanner
Open Control Center and choose Scan Code; add that control if it is missing. This scanner also offers a flashlight for dim surroundings. Apple‘s QR scanning instructions show the native options.
For a code shown on another screen, reduce glare and keep both screens steady. For an image saved on your phone, check whether Photos recognizes the code and offers its action; otherwise use a reader that explicitly supports importing images.
When to install a QR reader
Look for the exact extra feature you need: local scan history, image import, barcode formats or code generation. Check the current App Store description, in-app purchases and privacy information. “Free download” can include a subscription, and a QR app’s name does not prove that it protects against malicious websites.
Preview the destination
Read the domain before opening a link, particularly on payment notices or stickers placed over another code. Avoid entering account credentials just because the scanner opened a page. Use the relevant app or type a known address when a destination looks unexpected.
