iPhone sensors help the phone detect movement, light, nearby objects and other conditions. The exact set depends on the model: for example, Face ID and LiDAR are not features of every iPhone. Check your model’s specifications before buying an app or booking a repair for a missing feature.

What does each iPhone sensor do?
| Sensor or system | What it measures or detects | An everyday example |
|---|---|---|
| Accelerometer | Acceleration and changes in movement | Motion-based app features and orientation information. |
| Gyroscope | Rotation of the phone | Turning controls in a game or tracking device movement. |
| Ambient light sensor | The light around the device | Helping automatic screen-brightness adjustments. |
| Proximity sensor | An object close to the phone | Helping turn off the display when you hold a call to your ear. |
| Barometer | Air pressure | Providing information that can help estimate changes in elevation. |
| Touch ID | A registered fingerprint | Unlocking or approving an action on models with Touch ID. |
| Face ID / TrueDepth | Depth and facial information | Face authentication on supported models. |
| LiDAR Scanner | Distance and depth information | Supported augmented-reality and camera features. |
| Compass and location systems | Direction and position information | Showing your heading or location in a map app. |
Gyroscope and accelerometer: what is the difference?
The accelerometer responds to acceleration; the gyroscope responds to rotation. Apps can combine their readings, so a feature that follows your movements may use both. They are not two names for the same component.
A game refusing to rotate does not prove either sensor is broken. Check the game’s controls and the phone’s orientation lock first. Not every app supports every screen direction.
Ambient light and proximity do different jobs
The ambient light sensor helps the phone judge surrounding light. The proximity sensor helps detect when something is close. The screen going dark during a call is not simply the phone noticing a dark room.
Before assuming a hardware fault, clean the top front area of the phone and check whether a case or screen protector covers it. Compare normal calls and other apps, and note whether the problem started after a repair.
Which iPhones have LiDAR or Face ID?
Use specific models as examples rather than treating one sensor list as universal. Apple‘s iPhone 16 specifications list Face ID, a barometer, gyro, accelerometer, proximity and ambient light sensors. The iPhone 16 Pro specifications also list a LiDAR Scanner.
For an older model, such as an iPhone 5s, use that model’s own specification page. A newer iPhone’s sensor names or performance figures do not describe the older hardware.
Does the iPhone really have a compass?
Yes: Apple lists a digital compass in its location specifications. It should not be described as a feature created by GPS alone. Location can also use information from satellite navigation, Wi-Fi and cellular services; those are not all the same kind of sensor.
How to check your exact model
- Open Settings > General > About and note the model name.
- Find that model in Apple’s iPhone technical specifications.
- Check both Sensors and Location, plus the camera section if you need depth features.
If face recognition failed after a new screen was fitted, use our Face ID repair checks. A sensor list cannot tell you which part of an individual phone needs service.
