Face ID Not Working After a Screen Replacement? What to Check

If Face ID stopped working after an iPhone screen replacement, check for an obstruction, a settings issue or an unfinished repair before assuming the new screen is the cause. Face ID uses the TrueDepth system; a working selfie camera does not prove that every part of that system works.

Start with these checks

  1. Clean the front camera and sensor area gently. Check whether the new protector or case covers it.
  2. Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Confirm Face ID is set up and enabled for the action you are trying to use.
  3. Restart the iPhone, enter the passcode once, then try Face ID again.
  4. Check for an iOS update and record the exact error if setup still fails.

These follow Apple’s Face ID troubleshooting guide. On older models such as iPhone X, 11 and 12, test with the phone upright and your face clearly visible.

Check whether the repair was finished

Open Settings > General > About and look for Parts & Service History. What appears depends on the iPhone, iOS version and repair. If a supported part shows an unfinished-repair message, ask the repairer to check it.

Apple‘s Repair Assistant guide lists supported models and parts. Where Restart & Finish Repair is available, it can complete the required calibration. The device needs current software, Wi-Fi and more than 20% battery. This tool does not repair a torn cable or other physical damage.

What does the symptom suggest?

What you notice Next step
Face ID works for unlocking but not one app Check that app’s Face ID permission and sign-in settings.
Face ID began failing immediately after the repair Return to the repairer with the timing and exact error.
Setup cannot finish or repeatedly asks you to reposition Follow Apple’s checks, then arrange service if it continues.
Parts history says Finish Repair Check Repair Assistant support for that model and replaced part.
The front camera is blurred or other front features also fail Have the repairer inspect the installation and affected parts.

Should you reset Face ID?

Apple includes resetting and setting it up again among its troubleshooting steps. Remember that doing so removes the existing face setup. If the system cannot complete a new setup, repeated resets will not solve a hardware or calibration problem.

A full phone wipe is a much larger step and should not be your first response to a fault that appeared after repair. Keep a backup before any service work or data-erasing procedure.

Does a replacement screen always disable Face ID?

No universal rule fits every iPhone and repair. The model, software, parts, calibration and condition of the TrueDepth hardware all matter. Avoid assuming that every non-Apple display disables Face ID, or that a particular software update will fix every damaged sensor.

Ask the repairer what was replaced, whether the repair was completed and what their next diagnostic step is. Our iPhone sensor guide explains the different jobs of the front sensors. If the problem only appears during payment, also check Apple Pay card and bank support.
