2021 Processor and Mobile Performance Comparison

The performance battle has kicked off in 2021. Although already at the end of last year, we had some advance presentation such as the Xiaomi Mi 11. Now, we can glimpse how history has changed in terms of CPU performance and the GPU from last year. It is normal for some 2020 terminals to follow the highest, but they will soon be displaced by everything that is to come.

It is often said that generational change makes sense every two years . This is not valid for those who always want to carry the latest in their pocket, but it is valid for those who seek savings and are not always willing to change their mobile for one or two improvements, including a processor that performs at a higher level.

This time it was PhoneArena who made a comparison, taking into account the performance of the CPU and GPU of many terminals, including those of the mid-range. In addition, and it is something that is not taken into account many times, the performance of these sections of the hardware can differ a lot. The smartphone that shows the best performance with its processor or the GPU and vice versa does not have to always win.

Snapdragon 888, the King of 2021

It is the King processor in the current high-end Android. Terminals from Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, OnePlus, OPPO or Realme integrate it or will integrate it this year. Taking as an example the Galaxy S21 series in the variant that includes it, we clearly see the performance improvement over last year’s models with Snapdragon 865+ , although we cannot say that it is a big difference in the single-core performance, but yes in the multicore one.

It is also very curious to see how the mid-range has greatly improved its performance, but not so spectacularly. The 2019 phones with the Snapdragon 632 such as the Moto G7 have certainly been left behind, and they have little to do with the Exynos 980 series of 2020 or with the new Qualcomm chips for the 5G mid-range such as the Snapdragon 720G or 750G. In this last batch we find devices such as the Galaxy S52 or the Moto One 5G Ace

The importance of the GPU

The GPU, so important for the execution of graphics, has also shown great differences between the different terminals. In testing with Geekbench they ran at 1440p and 1080p. Here it is revealed how the iPhone with its A14, boast of an optimization that goes hand in hand with its ecosystem. The iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 achieve the highest scores followed not far behind by Xiaomi’s Mi 11 and Galaxy S21 Ultra. It should be noted that reaching the goal with the tongue out and in last place is the Pixel 5, a terminal that costs as much as many on this list and that gets a much worse score than the OnePlus Nord, which curiously has the same processor but costs almost half.

History has also changed on iPhone

That Apple made its own processors started with the iPhone 5S. The first with 64-bit architecture was the Apple A7 chip and as we can see, the company has been improving more and more over the years, improving performance speeds. In this sense, the improvement of the iPhone 12 compared to the iPhone 11 is remarkable. However, Apple’s bets for 2021 with the iPhone 13 will not arrive until after the summer.
