Windows 10 Will Allow You to Disable Reserved Storage

Windows has been taking up more and more space on our hard drive or SSD . However, Microsoft pulled on the handbrake and started reducing its size by introducing some system elements as optional in Windows 10 . All those changes were ruined by the May 2019 Update, since the operating system reserved space for it to use if needed. Now, finally, the operating system will allow us to disable it.

The feature, called Reserved Storage , is the amount that Windows 10 saves for updates, drivers, and other files you need. Depending on the computer, the system is saved up to more than 10 gigabytes from the first moment we install it.

How to enable or disable reserved storage

Luckily, with Windows 10 2004, we can disable the function. To do this, we just have to go to Command Prompt (CMD) and write DISM.exe / Online / Get-ReservedStorageState to check the status of Reserved Storage. From there, we can use one of the following two commands:

  • DISM.exe / Online / Set-ReservedStorageState / State: Enabled
  • DISM.exe / Online / Set-ReservedStorageState / State: Disabled

Where the first will allow us to activate the function, and the second deactivate it. This space, when not used for updates and drivers, is also used as temporary storage by Windows, so not all the space left by the system will be unused most of the time. By reserving this space, the system ensures that it can always update the operating system. Keep in mind that if you disable the feature, you may encounter various problems when updating Windows 10 if you do not have space available for it.

Although SSDs with capacities like 500GB or 1TB are becoming more frequent, there are many computers and tablets that come with only 64GB of eMMC memory, or even just 128GB of SSD. In these devices, each giga that can be gained to the operating system can make our lives much easier, and therefore Microsoft is going to allow deactivating this function.

In order to use the function, it will be necessary to wait for the launch of Windows 10 2004, which, if everything goes according to plan, will take place around May, although it could be delayed until June.

Windows 10 is already on more than 1 billion devices

Microsoft today also announced that Windows 10 is already present on more than 1 billion active devices. The number of users has grown very fast in recent months due to the end of Windows 7 support. They have also highlighted that 100% of Fortune 500 companies use Windows 10 on their devices.

In total, they have more than 80,000 laptop models and configurations and 2-in-1s from more than 1,000 manufacturers. In total, the $ 1 billion figure includes desktop, laptop, Xbox One and HoloLens. Initially, Microsoft expected to have reached that number of devices in 2018, and finally it has taken two more years.
