Any video game lover knows and surely uses Steam , Valve’s platform with one of the most extensive catalogs of games for PC. Since its birth in 2003, it has become the site where millions of users come to enjoy all kinds of titles, from the most popular of the big studios, to those designed by small developers and which also have a place on the platform.
Therefore, on Steam we can find many titles that we were passionate about years ago and that we enjoy on our PC. Titles that have multiplayer support, but only locally . However, Valve’s own platform has developed a system, known by the name of Steam Remote Play Together, which allows bringing “online mode” to these games.
What is Steam Remote Play Together and how it works
Specifically, it is a tool that allows any player to enjoy titles that only support local multiplayer with other friends over the Internet. That is, it gives these games the possibility of being able to play in multiplayer with our friends over the Internet and from the device that we want. We should not confuse the Remote Play Together function with Remote Play since, while the first is the one we have just mentioned and that offers us to play local multiplayer games with other people through the Internet, Remote Play is the function of the Valve that allows us to play remotely and from any other device, one of the games that run on our PC.
Now, how does Remote Play Together allow us to play these local multiplayer titles over the Internet. The answer is simple, what the platform does is create a kind of virtual LAN to “trick” the game into thinking that connected people belong to the same local network. However, each one can be at home and even hundreds of kilometers away.
In this way, we will be able to instantly share our local multiplayer Steam games with our friends over the Internet. One of the players is the one who installs and runs the game and later, the rest of the friends join the game , connecting to their PC through this virtual network, to start enjoying the game together.
First things first, activate Steam Remote Play Together
In order to enjoy any local multiplayer game with our friends over the Internet, the first thing we have to do is activate the remote game function on Steam. For this, these are the steps we must follow:
- We open the Steam client.
- We enter the configuration from View> Parameters .
- We select the Remote Play option from the list of parameters.
- We check or make sure we have the Activate Remote Play box checked.
- We accept to save the changes.
Invite our friends to join the game
After checking or activating the feature on Steam, we can now open the title we want to play in multiplayer through Steam Remote Play Together and invite our friends to join the game. For it:
- We open the game on Steam.
- We open the panel of our friends on Steam, Shift + TAB.
- We select the friends we want to invite to join the game. There we can see how the Remote Play Together option appears to us. Depending on the title, other options may appear.
- The selected friends will join in a broadcast waiting room.
- The next thing they have to do is connect to join the game.
- Once everyone is connected, we can start the multiplayer game and communicate with them.
