Malware uses increasingly sophisticated techniques to try to access our personal data. However, there are some that do not have to be so sophisticated to make many fall, since simply calling something that interests them is enough to steal data. The latest malware campaign takes advantage of the Black Widow movie.
This has been discovered by Kaspersky, which warns that there are attackers who are using the Black Widow film as a claim. This film has been delayed for more than a year due to the pandemic, and is now available in theaters and on Disney + . Being in maximum quality on the Disney streaming platform, there are some users who are already looking for the pirted movie, hence there are those who want to deceive.
They try to steal personal data
In particular, several phishing web pages have already appeared that seek to steal user access credentials. One of the websites analyzed by Kaspersky promised a small preview of the film in exchange for users to register. In this registration process, a username and password are first requested, and later a full name, address, country, credit card, expiration date and CVV are requested.
Investigators went ahead, and were able to see how, although the money was collected, they could not access the film. The scammers had it as easy as offering at least one link to the pirte website, but the scam is so crude that they didn’t even bother with it.
The fact of asking for username and password can be dangerous in itself if we enter a password that we use in another portal. Attackers can then take those credentials and try to access our accounts with them, so it is very important never to reuse a password, and always use unique passwords.
Launch scams skyrocketed
Kaspersky claims to have detected a spike in attempts to infect users by taking advantage of the release of new movies. Infection attempts began in May 2020, when the film was announced. There was also a rebound around November 2020, which is when it was initially going to be launched, and later during the month of May, the last date to be delayed.
As the final release date has approached, Kaspersky claims that there has been a 13% increase in infection attempts , and they have even created downloadable files with the movie and malware alongside it. Therefore, we must be careful with what we download, and it is preferable to opt for legal alternatives that will ensure that we do not get infected with this malware. On Disney +, watching Black Widow costs 21.99 euros, in addition to the subscription price. In addition, it is possible to download the movie on Disney + to watch it offline.
