For a free Windows disc burner, start with AnyBurn Free for everyday data, audio and ISO jobs. BurnAware Free and Ashampoo Burning Studio Free are alternatives, with different licensing and registration rules. To make a DVD movie with menus, use an authoring tool such as DVDStyler instead.
Copying files to a DVD, creating an audio CD and writing an ISO are different jobs. Your drive must also support the type of blank disc: a DVD writer cannot write Blu-ray discs just because the software lists Blu-ray support.
Free CD, DVD and Blu-ray software compared
| Program | Best starting point for | Free-version limits to know |
|---|---|---|
| AnyBurn Free — Windows | Data discs, audio CDs, disc images and audio-CD ripping | Free for personal and business use; choose Free rather than the separate Pro trial |
| BurnAware Free — Windows | Basic data, audio and image-burning jobs | The comparison lists a 32-bit Free build; business use and several advanced tools require a paid edition |
| Ashampoo Burning Studio Free — Windows | Guided audio and data-disc tasks | A permanently free edition with one-time registration; separate from paid Burning Studio |
| DVDStyler — Windows/Linux | DVD-Video authoring with menus | Open source and free; DVD authoring does not mean Blu-ray movie authoring |
| Windows Disc Image Burner | Writing a compatible ISO image | A built-in image-writing tool, without a full audio or video-authoring suite |
| K3b — Linux | Linux disc projects and related tools | Use your distribution's supported package; this is not a Windows application |
Which Windows burner should you try?
AnyBurn Free: a practical first choice
AnyBurn's official download page separates Free from Pro and lists both personal and business use for Free. Its free tools cover common disc-writing tasks, image creation and audio-CD ripping. Pick the build that matches your Windows system; the download page lists x86, x64 and ARM64 options. Check the Free/Pro feature table if you need a specific extra feature.
BurnAware Free: check the edition before installing
BurnAware Free covers basic data, audio and disc-image work. Its edition table puts features such as direct disc-to-disc copying, disc spanning and the video converter in paid editions. It also distinguishes the Free 32-bit build from paid 64-bit editions and does not license Free for a business environment. A 32-bit application can still run on compatible 64-bit Windows; the build label alone is not a Windows 11 exclusion.
Ashampoo Burning Studio Free: free with registration
Ashampoo's free edition supports everyday CD, DVD and Blu-ray workflows, but requires one-time registration. Make sure the download says Burning Studio Free: a trial of the paid product has different terms. This guide's recommendation is based on the current product documentation, not a completed disc-burning test.
Choose the right disc project
| What you want | Project to choose |
|---|---|
| Files for a computer | Data CD, DVD or Blu-ray, using a matching writer and disc |
| Music for a traditional CD player | Audio CD, within the blank CD's playing-time limit |
| MP3 files for a player that supports them | Data/MP3 disc; confirm that player's formats and disc support |
| An ISO such as an operating-system image | Burn image, rather than copying the ISO file onto a data disc |
| A movie with menus for a DVD player | DVD-Video authoring, such as DVDStyler |
An MP3 data disc is not the same as an audio CD. Likewise, putting an MP4 file on a DVD does not create DVD-Video navigation. For preparing the source video, compare free and open-source video editors.
Blu-ray data support also does not automatically include Blu-ray movie authoring or commercial movie decryption. Our remux versus re-encoding guide explains a separate part of the video workflow.
How to burn and check a disc
- Check the writer's supported media and insert the matching blank disc.
- Open the right project type and add your files or select the image.
- Check the capacity indicator and choose a supported writing speed.
- Enable verification where offered, then let the write finish without disconnecting an external drive.
- Read the completed disc in the device it is intended for. For a movie, check menus, audio and subtitles too.
For an ISO in Windows, right-click the image and look for Burn disc image; on Windows 11 it may be under Show more options. If the option is missing, the file association or lack of a suitable writer may be involved. A free burner with an explicit image-writing option is another route.
Keep the source files and another backup. Write-once discs can still be damaged, and rewritable discs can be changed. A successful burn is only useful if you can read it afterward.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Is AnyBurn Free a trial?
AnyBurn Free is a separate free edition for personal and business use. AnyBurn Pro has different features and trial terms, so check which download you choose.
Will copying an MP4 file to a DVD make it play in a DVD player?
A data disc containing an MP4 file is not automatically a DVD-Video disc. For a conventional DVD player, use a DVD authoring tool such as DVDStyler and check the finished disc in that player.
Can a DVD writer burn Blu-ray discs?
No. You need a writer that supports Blu-ray and a compatible blank disc. Software support for Blu-ray cannot add that capability to a DVD-only drive.
