There is no doubt that we have just had one of the worst years of our lives. Not only on a personal level, but also at work. Here the industries have noticed a significant recession due to the drop in sales that affected all markets, except for hydroalcoholic masks and gels. The smartphone industry was also affected with a large decline in the production and sales of devices.
As 2020 progressed, we saw a slight recovery, but with very different numbers from the previous year. Luckily, it seems that the first quarter of 2021 continues with this trend and mobile sales begin to grow, albeit slightly.
A new report from Strategy Analytics notes that global smartphone shipments were up 24% year-on-year, with 340 million units shipped compared to 275 million a year ago. The major manufacturers have seen increases of more than 10%, but there is one that is off the hook. And it is not due to the pandemic.

The dreaded group “others”
The most affected, not by the pandemic, but by the war it has with the US, is Huawei. Just look at the position it occupied in 2020 and now in 2021. In the first quarter of 2020 the brand was in second place while now it has fallen from the top five. It is certainly a drastic change for a company that took advantage of Covid-19 to reach the Top 1 due to good sales in China while the pandemic ravaged Europe.
Samsung continues to maintain the first position thanks to the good sales of the Galaxy S21 and the smartphones of the Galaxy A series, maintaining a market share of 23% and a year- on-year growth of 32%, which separates it from Apple and its share 17%, despite its huge growth of 44%.

However, once again, Xiaomi is the brand that grows the most on the podium, boasting a year-on-year growth of 80% to represent 15% of market share thanks to its expansion in Africa, Europe and Latin America. The gap between Apple and Xiaomi is quite small, so it would not surprise us if in the next quarter the Chinese firm unseated those from Cupertino from the second position.
The fourth place is for OPPO , which grows 65% compared to the previous quarter and remains with a share of 11%, the same that I live, which, yes, has grown by 85%. The rest of the manufacturers, which now includes Huawei, have lost without 23% of presence in the market in said quarter.
