How to measure the steps with a Xiaomi, Redmi or Poco mobile

If Xiaomi is known for something beyond mobile phones, it is for its sports activity bracelets known as Mi Band or Xiaomi Smart Band, which allow us to count the steps and do much more for a small price. Something that now we can save with the function of counting steps of the mobiles with MIUI.

Other manufacturers also offer similar options and Xiaomi, in order not to lag behind its competitors, has been working on a step counter for years that has gone through several phases. At first it could only be activated from the application vault, but with the integration of Google Discover this option disappeared and now if we want to get the Xiaomi step counter we have to follow a different process.

Mi Health, the MIUI step counter

In order to make our Xiaomi mobile count the steps with its own tool, we have to get hold of Mi Health, an app called Health in Spanish. No matter how many we look for it on our mobile, we will not find it since it is not included as standard in the Global or European ROM . On other occasions we have witnessed these inconceivable decisions that Xiaomi makes in other markets outside of China and this is one of those.

However, and being only an app, we will be able to get access to it on Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones as it is based on MIUI, regardless of the ROM. All we have to do is download the latest version of My Health from APK Mirror and after granting the permission to install third-party applications that it will request. Once the APK file is available on the mobile, you just have to tap on the install button and it will be available in a matter of seconds.

When accessing the Xiaomi Health application we will come across the means of configuring our profile, which will start with the Mi Account that we have on the smartphone . In addition, we will be aware that in many cases Spanish and English are combined, since the app has not been completely translated into our language as its landing in Spain is not planned for now.

We have to give important data related to health, such as gender, age or height. All of this is used for the sole purpose of improving information metrics. Another important thing is to grant access permission to the movement that our terminal occurs and that way the app is able to recognize when we are walking, cycling or performing non-sedentary activities to be taken into account by the app.

But the thing is not only about calculating the steps, since Xiaomi’s Health application continues to grow continuously with the intention of giving us more possibilities. From there we can start sports activities that are based mainly on walking, running and cycling, even offering to do it on a treadmill for gym days. In addition, we will be able to add activities manually, an interesting solution to make us forget the Mi Band completely since the mobile can create training parameters similar to those we would have achieved with the data provided.

It also allows us to establish a goal of step so that we have a goal to achieve. The GPS sometimes does not work as we would like, since it is based on maps of China, which usually fail in Spain, one of the few “buts” that we can put. On the other hand, we can benefit from other tools such as weight monitoring, movements throughout the day to avoid sitting too long and sleep monitoring that is not very worked.

It also has a tool to track people’s body temperature, although the only option to add it is manually. If at some point the app continues to develop, it would be good to know other ways of measuring that make the app more complete.

How accurate is the meter?

After having put it to the test, we can confirm that it works, although it is true that the tracking of your steps can sometimes be higher than the steps we actually take. Even if we close the app or the mobile is locked, the smartphone and especially the app will continue to receive the information of the steps relying on the gyroscope and the sensors. In a similar way to what Google Fit or other alternative apps do.

We can confirm with this that its reliability is the same as that of its rivals, therefore it falls a few steps behind the Mi Band (pun intended) or other alternative bracelets. It serves us as an approximation or to get an idea of everything we have traveled while walking, but not as an extra measure of activities. Unfortunately, there is no way to link the data from the Mi Band or other apps in this tool, in order to improve the step counter.

The future of Mi Health

Although there is no information on the arrival of the application in our country, the semi-translation of some devices makes us trust that it will end up arriving. Another beginning is given by the linking of services, which although for now it does not help to export the data from My Fit to this health app, it is a step to take into account since if the information from our Account is taken into account Me. We will have to wait to learn more about the future of the app that is totally related to the design of MIUI 12 , but that continues to present features halfway to being a final version, at least outside of China.

Can we use it on other Android phones?

Unfortunately for all those who want to put the app to the test, Xiaomi has developed the app with a limitation in the software. Android smartphones, therefore, that do not have MIUI as a customization layer, will be unable to use the app no matter how much they try to test some versions or others of Mi Health.
