Multimedia content is nowadays the most consumed worldwide. In addition, more and more devices from which we can play all kinds of videos, movies or series. In this sense, Kodi has become one of the most used players for this, since it allows us to play the vast majority of multimedia file formats. Although there are already many users who make use of the player on their computer, mobile, tablet or even Raspberry, if you are reading these lines it is because you are thinking about the possibility of installing Kodi on your PS4, Xbox or Wii console.
What is Kodi and what platforms is it compatible with?
For the most clueless who still do not know very well what exactly Kodi is, it must be said that it is a completely free Open Source software, which has been developed to allow the reproduction of multimedia content on different devices.
He was born under the name of Xbox Media Player or XBMC , but over the years he was renamed Kodi. Its previous name already gives us some clue about the systems for which the famous player is compatible but with the passage of time it has been possible to have the multimedia player on more devices.
Another advantage of the player is that since it is an Open Source software under the GNU / GPL license, it is that anyone with knowledge can access its code and develop new functions. This is why today we can find a lot of accessories that allow us to expand the capabilities of the player.
Now, the big question is , can I install Kodi on any console? . The truth is that if we go to the official website of the player, we can see that the player is officially compatible with devices that have Windows, OSX, iOS, Android, Linux or even Raspberry operating system.
As we can see there is no trace of the consoles, however, about two years ago of the launch of the version of Kodi compatible with Xbox One that allows us to easily convert our console into a multimedia center. What happens with the rest?. The answer is that the player is not compatible with PS4 and Wii , but as we will show below, we can find certain alternatives.
Steps to follow to install Kodi on Xbox One
With the arrival of the 64-bit version of Kodi 10 Leia, the media player is again compatible with the Microsoft console as a native application. So much so, that we can find the program available for download and installation in the Microsoft Store.
In this way, we will be able to install Kodi on Xbox One using the Xbox App Store or from Windows. In the first case, these are the steps that we must follow:
- We turn on the Xbox and place ourselves on the home screen
- We enter the Xbox App Store from the menu
- We search for the player and select the application from the list of results
- We enter the details page of the application and click on Install .
- The download and installation process will automatically begin
- Once finished we will have the player available for use. It is possible to access Kodi from the menu of our Xbox.
If we prefer, it is also possible to install the player in our console from Windows remotely. To do this, it is important that we have our Xbox on and follow these steps:
- We open the Microsoft Store from our desktop in Windows 10 identifying with our account
- We perform a search for Kodi
- Select the player and click on the Install button on Xbox One
- Windows 10 will connect to our console to install the application
- Once the process is finished, we will be notified
- We will already have the player installed on Xbox
Can I have Kodi on PS4 and Wii?
As we have commented previously, it is not officially available for PS4 or Wii, however, we can use certain tricks to get content played through the famous player on both consoles.
In the case of the Nintendo console there is a fairly simple solution. To try to play content through Kodi on the console, what we are going to do is use our mobile phone as a “bridge” and then send the content to the console. Therefore, the first thing we have to do is connect our mobile with the Wii and have both devices connected to the same WiFi network.
Next, we must install the Kodi app on our smartphone if we do not already have it (available for iOS and Android) and finally, we will send the content of the player to our Wii console.
In the case of the Sony platform , the thing is not so easy. Now, we can take advantage of a tool like Plex and also use our smartphone. These would be the steps to follow:
- We connect our PS4 to the TV and the Internet
- We search and install Plex on the console
- We registered and creating an account in Plex
- We install Plex on our mobile ( iOS and Android )
- Plex session started from the PS4 with the same account we created
- Enter the code shown on our mobile
- We go to System Configuration and mark the options Camera Roll, Advertise as Server and Network Discovery
- Now we can try to stream any Kodi content from the mobile to the TV connected to the PS4
