How to Disable Laptop Speakers in Windows 10

Every time the use of laptops is on the rise to the detriment of desktop computers. Among the features that make up any laptop are the integrated speakers, which, although generally not of great quality, do allow us to listen to any type of sound. Either for privacy reasons or so that they do not bother us when we are working or studying, we have different ways to be able to completely deactivate the sound of the speakers.

When we have a desktop computer, deactivating the speakers is a very simple task since it will be enough to turn them off or unplug the power cord. In the case of the laptop, the speakers are integrated so if we want to turn them off we will have to get into the system configuration. For this reason, we are going to check what are the ways in which we can disable the speakers of our laptop in Windows 10.

Disable Laptop Speakers in Windows 10

Turn it off by pressing its keyboard button

It is the simplest way by which we can turn off the speakers by pressing a button without having to deactivate it completely. Many laptops include various shortcuts on their keyboard with which to perform different functions such as increasing or decreasing the brightness, activating the airplane mode, raising and lowering the volume, as well as turning off the sound completely. In general, this button is easily recognizable, as it has a drawing of a speaker together with a crossed out circle, which indicates that it turns off the sound when we press it. In this way we do not disable or deactivate the sound completely, since it only turns it off, and once we press it again it turns on again.

Disable the sound option in Control Panel

From Windows 10 we can disable the speakers in various ways. One of them through the portable sound options. To do this we must access the “Control Panel”, writing its name in the start menu bar. Once inside, we select “Hardware and sound”, and later the option of “Sound”. Next, a new window will open, where we will click on the “Playback” tab, and with the right mouse button we select the “Speaker / Headphone” option. A contextual menu will appear where we must choose the “Disable” option. Once this is done, click on “Apply” and “OK” to save the changes.

Disable the sound through its properties

Another option we have to deactivate the sound through its properties . To do this, we must follow the steps in the previous case, accessing the “Control Panel”, clicking on “Hardware and sound”, and “Sound”. Within the Playback tab, we right-click on the “Speaker / Headphone” and select “Properties”. Next, a drop-down window appears and we select the “General” tab and at the bottom we look at the “Device use” section. We click on the drop-down and select the option “Do not use this device (disable)” . Finally, click on “Apply” and “OK” to save the changes.

Turn off sound from the Settings menu

From the Windows Settings menu it is also possible to disable the speakers of our laptop. To do this we must access by pressing the keyboard shortcut “Windows + I”. Next, click on the “System” tab and then on “Sound in the left sidebar”. Now we look at the central part of the screen, just below the Troubleshoot button and click on “Manage audio devices” . In the next window we will see the output devices, where we must click on “Speaker / Headphone”. Finally, it only remains to click on the “Disable” button .

Additionally, from the “Sound” page we can also select “Device properties” and a new window will appear from where we can also disable the sound by checking the corresponding box.

Use Windows 10 Device Manager

We can also disable the speakers of our laptop by accessing the Windows Device Manager. To access it, the easiest way is to type its name into the start menu box and select it. Once inside, we display the section “Sound and video controllers and game devices”. Here we must click with the right mouse button on the audio controller and select the option “Disable device”. When selecting it, a security message will appear. Click on “Yes” to confirm the action and thus disable the sound. If the speaker remains enabled, we will need to restart the PC for the changes to be carried out correctly.
