Google Chrome Will Use Less RAM in Windows 10 May 2020 Update

One of Google Chrome‘s favorite dishes is RAM. This has been one of the main problems of the Google browser, which, as soon as we open a few websites and install some extensions, the use of RAM can skyrocket to several gigs. And those who notice it most are the users of mid-range computers. Google has been working for a long time to reduce the memory expense of your browser, without success. And finally, it seems that the solution has come from Microsoft thanks to one of the novelties of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update .

Edge is Microsoft’s web browser. While until recently this browser used its own proprietary engine, for a few months Microsoft finished with its engine and made the jump to Chromium, the Google OpenSource engine on which Chrome is also based. Obviously, the excessive consumption of RAM memory was one of the points that worried Microsoft the most. Therefore, the company has been working hard to solve this problem. And the solution has come thanks to the new Segment Heap Memory Management system introduced in the API of the Windows 2004 version.

Google Chrome Will Use Less RAM in Windows

The change has managed to greatly reduce the use of RAM in the new Edge. And, of course, Google is also going to implement this change in the Chromium engine, which will get Google Chrome, and any other browser based on it, to start consuming much less RAM.

They manage to reduce memory usage by almost 30%

Microsoft engineers have ensured that, with this new feature enabled, the RAM consumption of the new Chromium- based Edge has been reduced by 27% .

Google has also already been researching with this new feature. And while the company has not given precise data on how much RAM it can save, its engineers literally claim to be able to save hundreds of megabytes of memory.

Consumo RAM Chrome

Segment Heap Memory Management is not new to Windows 10. This feature was used primarily in some modern Windows 10 UWP applications as well as some system tools. Thanks to the new Windows 10 Build 19041.0 SDK , Segment Heap Memory Management will now be usable in virtually any Windows Win32 program. And the first to introduce and enable it will be the Edge and Chrome browsers.

In addition to helping reduce RAM usage in browsers, this new memory management system will allow developers to reduce memory usage in their applications with a simple call to the Windows API. And the programs that will see it the most will be those that usually work a lot with the network.

Some unknown errors force us to expect this feature

For now we do not know when we can start enjoying this new function in browsers. It is true that the new SDK of Build 19041.0 is now available. However, due to a series of mysterious errors, Microsoft has blocked the use of this SDK in stable versions of Windows. In addition, when compiling browsers (Chrome and Edge) with this SDK, a series of warnings appear that, although they do not cause major problems, must be solved.

Google and Microsoft already have their browsers ready. As soon as the problems with the SDK are solved, these news should reach all users. However, we don’t know when this will be. It can be in a few days, or in a few months.

Once the SDK is ready, many other programs will be able to start benefiting from this reduced RAM.
