Doublicat Review: Create GIFs with Your Own Face

Deepfake have become somewhat scary, as it is being used to put faces of people in movies and all kinds of content. This system works through AI, and “learn” a face based on multiple photos or videos of a person. Now, this system is available to anyone to put their face in a GIF and create memes with your face.

Deepfakes have become so dangerous that they have banned them on social networks like Facebook, except for uses for comic purposes. To make them more easily we have Doublicat, which is an application that allows us to put our face in a GIF. The application is available on iOS and Android, and is really easy to use.

Behind this application is RefaceAI , an AI with GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) trained to replace faces in moving videos. Its creators have already developed an app called Reflect that replaced faces in photos, but now they have gone a step further with Doublicat to be able to do it with moving images of GIFs.

To create our GIF we just have to take a selfie, and select the GIF in which we want to replace our face. We only need a photo, although we can have several faces and several angles to try in case it looks better. The GIFs in which we can put our face are limited to the selection offered by the app, but we have enough to choose from the most popular and have a laugh.

In terms of privacy , the application asks us for permission as soon as we open it to “provide our face data”. In the privacy policy we can see that they collect the photos and facial features separately. In the latter case they ensure that they are not collecting any biometric data. In addition, images are stored for 24 hours on their servers and facial features for 30 days after the last use of the app. The aggregated or unidentified data will be stored “as long as necessary”, although they are simple facial vectors, whose data also do not share with third parties. Therefore, it seems to be safer than FaceApp or Zao .

Thus, the application does not use a 3D model of the face as it is used with deepfakes, which makes the face replacement process faster. With this, the result is good enough to be funny, but without becoming so good that the privacy of the person may be jeopardized.

Looking ahead, the RefaceAI team wants to launch an application to replace faces in videos, although this may create a new controversy for the problems of fake videos that this has generated. Platforms like TikTok and Snapchat are working on launching similar technologies to share content on social networks.
