Darkest Dungeon 2 is about to drop but first you should try its first part

There is a genre that gamers love that is dungeons. Those that appear dark, full of danger and that on all occasions forever mark the meaning of our departure. And if you put a layer of role-playing on top of it, with classes of different characters, graphics as personal as they are superb, and some extremely gloomy dungeons, we get Darkest Dungeon . A game that was released in 2016 and that has been a huge success on practically all platforms.

Darkest Dungeon

Cards, role and turn-based combat

The fact is that Darkest Dungeon is going to have a second part that, although it already went through an early access process last year, it will not be until the second quarter of 2023 (from April to June) that we will have it finally released for our computers. So since we have a few empty months ahead of us, how about we revisit its first installment, which was the one that really marked the path of the saga?

Darkest Dungeon is one of those games that arrive with a certain amount of discretion but quickly become a reference in its genre. In this case we can talk about one that mixes a dark story, a very careful graphic aspect that always plays with that 2.5D effect and a setting that surrounds us every time we decide to play a game. But that packaging would be nothing without chicha, without a playable crumb to put in our mouths.

And Dungeon Darkest has plenty of that because it doesn’t matter where you play it, its experience is always satisfactory . Whether on a PC, on a tablet with iOS or Android, on a Nintendo Switch, on PS4, Xbox One or on the now-defunct (not forgotten) PS Vita.

Dungeons and hundreds of enemies

In Darkest Dungeon we manage a group of heroes who are nourished by the inhabitants of a strange village where they live together with a dark evil. The idea is to create new four-member patrols that each have a very different class and a skill tree that we must evolve. The problem is that the dungeons are very demanding and more units than expected will fall into service, so we will have to replace them with other characters and lose precious resources along the way.

Darkest Dungeon.

Going through the dungeons is the most fun because we move (laterally) with the group through corridors that are connected to others and that take us to the depths where the biggest enemies await us. Along the way we can light torches, collect objects and items, the occasional energy repairer and things like that, but the most important thing is that the enemies usually come out of nowhere, by surprise, hitting us first.

These turn-based combats are the best you will see because they are simple and fast and, above all, they pose a challenge to know how to execute the right blow or movement at every moment. A parry or an attack that does not reach its objective can mean the death of a unit and, therefore, leave the expedition lame for the rest of the adventure.

Proof of its success is that Darkest Dungeon today maintains its relatively high price and on Steam, for example, you can get it for about 25 euros, with all the DLC and extras that have been appearing in the last seven years. So take advantage, when Darkest Dungeon 2 arrives you won’t be able to enjoy the first one anymore…
