Check if your Apple Watch is obsolete with this list

apple watch edition

Apple maintains public lists that indicate which products are considered outdated or obsolete. When a product falls into this category, it means that it will no longer receive official technical support or repairs. This is particularly relevant for early adopters of Apple Watch or owners of older models. In this post, we will explore the current situation regarding these devices.

Category differences are important

When purchasing an Apple product, we naturally anticipate its longevity and usefulness. However, it’s important to understand the distinctions that arise when considering devices that have been available on the market for an extended period. Firstly, it’s crucial to note that a device no longer receiving updates does not automatically render it obsolete. In the case of Apple Watches, those capable of supporting watchOS 9 (the latest version, until the release of watchOS 10) include the following models:

  • Apple WatchSeries 4
  • Apple WatchSeries 5
  • Apple WatchSeries 6
  • Apple WatchSeries 7
  • Apple WatchSeries 8
  • Apple Watch SE
  • Apple Watch Ultra

Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Series 3

Apple Watch models from Series 1 to Series 3 are no longer receiving software updates. However, they are not officially classified as obsolete until Apple includes them on the designated list. Prior to being categorized as “vintage,” these models fall into the category of “old products,” representing an intermediate stage. These devices have been available on the market for several years but have not yet reached the point of being discontinued. Only when more than seven years have passed since their removal from sale are they considered officially obsolete.

Old or obsolete Apple Watch?

As of May 8, 2023, Apple released an updated list of old and obsolete devices. Currently, no Apple Watch models have been categorized as obsolete. However, there is a list of Apple Watches that Apple considers to be classified as old equipment. The models included in this list are as follows:

  • Apple Watch 1st generation, 38mm.
  • Apple Watch 1st generation, 42mm.
  • Apple Watch Series 2, with aluminum case, 38 mm.
  • Apple Watch Series 2, with aluminum case, 42 mm.

The Apple Watch Series 3 presents a unique case. While it no longer receives software updates, it has not been classified as an old product nor is it on the list of obsolete devices. Despite not receiving further system updates, the Series 3 remains fully functional with its existing hardware and software capabilities.

If we consult Apple’s official technical service, we will find estimated prices for repairs and services covering the Apple Watch Series 3 to the Apple Watch Ultra models. This indicates that the models considered “old” are still eligible for technical support. Their eligibility for support will only cease once Apple designates them as obsolete. It is only a matter of time before we learn which models will be included in the upcoming lists.
