If Google Discover is blank or its stories will not open, first check whether the problem affects the feed, one article or the whole internet connection. These are different faults. A factory reset is not a sensible first step for a missing news card.

Work out what is failing
| Symptom | Useful first check |
|---|---|
| The feed is missing from the home screen. | Open the Google app directly and check its Discover setting. |
| Discover opens but stays empty. | Check the connection, selected account and app update. |
| Only one story will not load. | Open the publisher’s page in the browser; the site may be the problem. |
| The stories are irrelevant. | Review interests and personalization rather than reinstalling the phone. |
Check the connection and the Google app
- Open a familiar website in the browser.
- If that fails too, compare Wi-Fi and mobile data where available.
- Close and reopen the Google app, then refresh Discover.
- Check for an official Google app update in your device’s app store.
- Restart the phone if the app still behaves incorrectly.
If mobile data is the only failing connection, our Xiaomi mobile-data checks explain how to separate an app fault from a phone-network problem. For other brands, use the equivalent settings for your model.
Check whether Discover is enabled
In the Google app, open your profile menu and check Settings for Discover, General or the home-page feed control. Labels change by app version. Google’s Discover on/off instructions show the controls for supported platforms.
The feed shown by a phone’s launcher can have a separate home-screen switch. If Discover works inside the Google app but not beside your home screen, check the launcher’s settings. Not every launcher provides the same panel.
Check the account and your preferences
Look at the account selected in the Google app, particularly if you have personal and work accounts. Managed accounts can have restrictions. A different account can also have different interests and history settings.
Google’s Discover customization guide explains saved history and personalized recommendations. Review those choices if you want personalized stories; you do not need to switch on every history option just to troubleshoot a connection. Less relevant recommendations and a feed that cannot connect are not the same symptom.
If the app still will not load
On Android, you can check the Google app’s storage settings and clear its cache if that option is available. Clear cache is different from clearing all app data. Read the confirmation before removing data, accounts or settings.
Note whether the same problem occurs on another device or connection. If several devices fail at once, wait and check again later rather than repeatedly resetting your phone. If only one linked article fails, report it or try the publisher directly. Keeping a short record of the error and what works makes support much easier.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Discover work in the app but not on my home screen?
The launcher can control its own feed panel. Check the home-screen settings separately from the Google app.
Should I factory-reset my phone for a blank feed?
Start with the connection, app update, feed setting and account. A factory reset is excessive as an initial check.
Does clearing cache delete my Google Account?
Clearing an app cache is different from deleting an account or clearing all app data. Read the exact option and confirmation on your device.
Why will only one news story not open?
The publisher page or that individual link may be failing. Test another story and open the publisher in the browser.
