DaaS is a way to provide a desktop as a hosted service. Remote desktop is a way to use a computer from another device. They can overlap: a DaaS service may use a remote desktop protocol to show your cloud desktop.

The choice is therefore not simply “cloud or remote access.” Start by deciding whose computer you need to use, where it will run and who will manage it.
What is Desktop as a Service?
Desktop as a Service, or DaaS, gives users access to desktops hosted by a provider. They connect over a network using an app or browser supported by that service.
Windows 365, for example, provides Cloud PCs. The service, plan and organization determine the resources and management options. Do not assume that every subscription includes all your business apps, backups or support tasks.
What is remote desktop?
Remote desktop lets you see and control a computer’s desktop from somewhere else. The remote machine could be a PC in your office, a server or a virtual machine.
RDP means Remote Desktop Protocol. It is one technology used for remote access, not another name for DaaS. Remote support tools also work differently from an ordinary Windows Remote Desktop session; whether someone at the remote PC can see the same screen depends on the tool and session type.
DaaS and access to your own PC compared
| Question | Hosted desktop service | Remote access to your own PC |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the work run? | On the provider’s hosted infrastructure. | On the existing remote computer. |
| Typical cost | Ongoing service charges and any extra licensing. | The PC, electricity, software and maintenance, plus any remote-access service. |
| Who keeps hardware running? | The provider for its infrastructure. | You or your IT team for the host PC. |
| Can you add users easily? | Subject to plan, capacity and deployment limits. | Subject to the host, software and license limits. |
| Does it work without a connection? | The remote session normally needs a working network connection. | The client must be able to reach the host over the relevant network. |
Does DaaS remove all IT management?
No. A provider managing its infrastructure does not mean it manages every application or account. Microsoft‘s Windows 365 responsibility guide separates cloud infrastructure duties from customer duties such as user access, application updates and security configuration.
Before signing up, ask who handles operating system updates, app licenses, backups, recovery, support and user removal. Get those answers for the exact service you are buying.
Can Windows Home act as a Remote Desktop host?
Microsoft’s built-in Remote Desktop host requires an eligible edition such as Windows Pro; Windows Home can be a client. Check the host’s edition before following setup instructions.
The official Remote Desktop guide explains this distinction. If needed, our Windows Home-to-Pro guide covers the edition change.
The host also needs to be powered on and reachable. An office laptop that has hibernated is not an available desktop just because remote access was enabled earlier. See how lid and power-button actions affect hibernation.
Which option fits your situation?
- You need your existing office files and apps occasionally: secure access to the existing PC may be enough.
- You need managed desktops for a team: compare hosted services and the work your IT team still has to do.
- You need graphics-heavy or specialist software: check app licensing, hardware requirements and real session performance first.
Use multi-factor authentication where supported and an approved access method such as a managed gateway or VPN. Avoid exposing RDP directly to the public internet as a casual setup shortcut. Also check your home connection options: delay and interruptions affect remote work, not just download speed.
