Kindle File Formats Explained: EPUB, PDF, AZW and MOBI

Updated 19 October 2026.

You can read an EPUB book on a Kindle by sending it through Amazon’s conversion service. That is different from copying the same EPUB file directly to the device over USB. This distinction explains much of the conflicting advice about Kindle formats.

Formats Supported by the Amazon Kindle E-Reader

Start with how you plan to transfer the file

File or book type A sensible route What to remember
EPUB without incompatible copy protection Send to Kindle. Amazon converts it; USB copying does not provide the same conversion.
PDF document Send to Kindle or a model-supported USB transfer. A fixed page can be hard to read on a small screen.
DOCX, TXT, HTML or supported image file Check Send to Kindle’s supported inputs. Layout and reading features can change during conversion.
A book bought from Amazon Download through the Kindle account used for the purchase. Delivery and supported features depend on the device and title.
Old MOBI or AZW-family file Check the exact file and model. Legacy support does not mean every transfer method still accepts it.

How Send to Kindle works

Use Amazon’s Send to Kindle page, an available desktop or mobile sharing option, or your approved Send to Kindle email workflow. Sign in to the correct Amazon account, select the file and allow time for processing and delivery.

Amazon’s personal-document guidance lists supported input types, including EPUB and PDF. This is an input list for a service, rather than a promise that the e-reader opens every listed format unchanged.

After delivery, open the document and check a few pages. Inspect chapter navigation, images, tables and unusual characters. A book that looks fine on a computer can still need layout adjustments on an e-reader.

EPUB and USB are different cases

If you want the simplest EPUB route, use Send to Kindle. If you prefer USB, consult your model’s supported formats and convert a permitted, unprotected file to a suitable format first. Renaming .epub to another extension does not convert the contents.

Calibre can help organize and convert your own compatible books. Keep the originals and use a separate converted copy. Our guides to moving a Calibre library and finding duplicate e-books help when a growing collection becomes difficult to manage.

What happened to MOBI?

MOBI appears in many older Kindle guides, but do not choose it automatically for a new workflow. Amazon has moved away from it across services. Its MOBI publishing FAQ describes the end of MOBI manuscript acceptance in KDP. Publishing rules are separate from an older device’s ability to open an existing file.

Check the current Send to Kindle input list for personal documents, and your device’s documentation for USB. These are different questions, with different answers.

PDF, comics and audiobooks need extra care

A PDF often preserves a page designed for a larger screen. Zooming and panning may be necessary, and scanned pages do not automatically become clean, adjustable text. Complex comics and illustrated books can also behave differently from a plain novel.

Do not assume CBZ, CBR or every audiobook format is accepted because a Kindle supports books. Audio support varies by model and region. For protected books from another store, use the seller’s supported reading or export options rather than assuming Send to Kindle removes DRM.

FAQs

Can Kindle read EPUB now?

You can send a supported EPUB through Send to Kindle for conversion. That does not mean the same file opens natively when copied over USB.

Is PDF always the best format?

No. It preserves page layout, but that layout may be awkward on a small e-reader. A reflowable book is often easier to resize.

Why was my file rejected?

Check its format, file condition, copy protection and the service’s current limits. An extension alone does not prove the file is valid.

Will conversion remove copyright protection?

No. Treat incompatible DRM as a compatibility restriction and use the store’s authorized reading options.
