Zelda Ocarina of Time in Unreal 5 is a real blast

Zelda Ocarina of Time

For many players, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of the best video games ever. Its fantastic story, its mechanics or its music automatically make you travel to the past, this title being an unlimited source of nostalgia. However, Nintendo hasn’t cared as much about this game over the years. Although there was a remaster for Nintendo 3DS, we have always thought that Ocarina of Time deserved much more. And it is no coincidence that there are so many indies developing their own remakes of this masterpiece.

Ocarina of Time fangame levels up with UE5

A few months ago we told you about a programmer who was making his own ultra-realistic version of Ocarina of Time using Unreal Engine 5. The RwanLink results were quite interesting, but the truth is that at no time did we have any hope that the hypothetical game reach our computers. However, for all these years, the developer CryZENx has been developing its version of the video game, and this time there are ways to download it and play it at home.

CryZENx has been working on its own remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for years. He started doing it in Unreal Engine 4, and has perfected every detail of the game to make it much more current. From time to time, the creator has been uploading videos showing his improvements. CryZENx versions of Zelda are available to their patrons on Patreon.

Just a few days ago, CryZENx told their community that they had successfully ported their fangame to Unreal Engine 5. For now, their patrons can only settle for a small downloadable demo. However, we have been able to see a video that shows in detail the technical improvements that the game has achieved thanks to the engine change.

As he comments on YouTube, making the transition from one engine to another has not been an easy operation, but seeing the results, he does not regret it at all. The game has benefited greatly in terms of lighting, textures and reflections. Thanks to the change, the fangame is now also compatible with DLSS , Nvidia’s technology that allows the frames per second to be increased thanks to the Tensor core of the GeForce RTX cards. We assume that in a few months, this EU5 version will be available to your Patreon members.

Could Nintendo do a similar project?

If a programmer can do a project like this at home with practically no help, why doesn’t Nintendo do something similar? It has been 24 years since Ocarina of Time was released. Objectively speaking, the game no longer enters through the eyes, because the video game industry has changed and the new generations will hardly notice it.

Projects like this could get CryZENx into trouble, but once again, an independent developer shows us that he can do the work of an entire company by himself. Let’s hope that the Big N takes notes so that one day we can enjoy a real remake of Ocarina of Time . At the moment, it is almost confirmed that the next Nintendo Switch will be compatible with DLSS, so technically, the graphic step will not be an impediment.
