A large number of files of different styles coexist on our computer, and one of them is images. To have them always well organized and to be able to visualize them we need a viewer. Windows incorporates its Photos tool, which is somewhat limited, so if we want to view, edit and manage our photos in the best way, we can use XnView .
XnView is a tremendously complete, versatile and popular tool with which we will not only be able to view our images, but also incorporates other functions to edit and organize them simply and quickly. It has compatibility with more than 500 image formats , among which are the most used as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PSD, WEBP, JPEG2000, OpenEXR, RAW camera, HEIC, PDF, DNG, CR2, among others. It has a great similarity with programs like ACDSee in terms of the number and variety of functions, so if we have been ACDSee users then it will be even easier to use Xnview.
This application has really interesting functions such as the possibility of adjusting the color, resizing the image, editing the metadata (IPTC, XMP), cropping the photograph, etc. It also has other features such as the possibility of changing the name in batches, batch converter, duplicate image search, making slide shows … In this way we have all kinds of tools available with a single application, being very useful. And best of all, it is easy to use, and can be used by both expert and beginner users.
XnView, a photo editor with additional functions
Once we start using XnView, the application will show us its main menu with five panels which can be dragged to make them bigger or smaller according to our taste. On the left side we have the browser with all the folders on the hard drive. As we select an image, it will appear in the upper right, with File Information, Category and Preview in the lower panels. If some of these panels are left over, just press the “x” to close it.
The browser you have is quite similar to what Windows Explorer is, so we only have to navigate through its directory structure and locate the images, which will be shown in thumbnail.
Tools for all kinds of operations
If we double click on an image, it will open in a new tab within the application. At the top we will see that we have the Toolbar available. Here we will have different functions such as Crop, Resize, Rotate 90º to the left or right, Adjust, add Curves, Zoom In or Zoom Out, view Full Screen, Print, Capture and make a quick Presentation.
If we click on the Adjust option, it will allow us to enhance the colors, being able to vary the Brightness, Contract, Gamma, Temperature, Exposure, Hue, Lightness, Saturation and the colors Red, Green and Blue.
Just above the Toolbar we have the Menu Bar , made up of the File, Edit, View, Image, Tools and Help tabs. Within each tab we find the options available in the Toolbar along with other additional options. For example, in the Tools tab, we find the Batch Conversion . This allows operations with several files at the same time, such as resizing or applying filters. To do this, simply indicate the files to which you want to apply the actions and the folder where they will be saved with the changes made.
In the same tools tab we can also find the Metadata option. Inside we will find the function of Edit IPTC / XMP . From here we can modify the metadata of an image so that they can contain all the information that we would like. So we can fill in all kinds of data, such as the title, the author up to the origin of the image or the date and time it was taken.
Join and split images with Create function
Another interesting feature is the ability to Join images. This option will be found in the Menu Bar in the Create tab. If we click on Join images, a window will appear where we can select all the images we need. These images can be joined vertically, horizontally, in the form of a mosaic or collage. It is an ideal feature to make our own compositions with multiple photos.
In the same way that we can join images, we also have the option of dividing images . From here we can make the divisions by Rows / Columns or Size (pixels). We must also select the Output folder, where the result of the image division will be saved. Once all the parameters have been selected, click on Accept and check how the image has been divided into as many parts as we have selected.
