Xiaomi has shown what will be its next great innovation in the world of smartphones, and as you can see, it is related to the photographic aspect. And it is that the manufacturer wants to take a new leap in zoom photography, but paying attention to the most important element of a photograph: light.
Mobile phones will become compact cameras

Although we have already seen mobiles with varifocal lenses before, and today periscope lenses offer up to 10 optical magnifications, Xiaomi’s proposal goes much further than what we might think at first glance, since the secret of this zoom system optical would be at the lens aperture.
According to the manufacturer has shown through its official profile on Weibo, the lens would include a large aperture that would allow a light input of more than 300% compared to current systems, and also would have a stabilization system that would help to avoid shaking.
The brand has posted a video to demonstrate how the lens moves in operation, and has also shown a demonstration of the focus adjustment in which it can be seen that the depth of field is quite remarkable at short distances between objects and the background.
There’s still much to do

Considering what we have seen, it is clear that aesthetically it is still a first functional prototype, so the system could still have a lot to develop, but it is still a very interesting advance that could change the current perspective of current camera systems on mobile phones.
Fewer cameras in the future

And is that if today most phones (if not all) have more than two cameras, this system would help reduce the number of lenses to be able to have different focal lengths in the same lens, at the same time you would enjoy a generous aperture with which to capture maximum light.
That said, if today we find a main sensor of many megapixels with a wide-angle lens and a second sensor of fewer mega-pixels with a magnification lens, this new system would allow us to use the same sensor to take both an angular photo and a photo with zoom.

Why are zoom lenses not used as the main camera today? Well, basically because of the opening problem. The main sensors, having a more angular lens, have a larger aperture with which to capture much more light than the sensors with magnification lenses, so the idea of Xiaomi would finally solve this impediment, hence the two cameras merged. in one with the idea of reducing cameras on the backs of phones. Not bad, right?
