xCloud and Stadia on the App Store: Apple Allows Streaming Gaming

After numerous complaints from users and developers, especially those responsible for services such as xCloud, Stadia and GeForce Now, Apple announced changes to the rules of the App Store in order to allow the game via streaming . The problem is that, as always, it will be his style and that does not seem to convince everyone.

Apple Arcade Games

You will already know that until now Apple did not allow the game via streaming on its mobile devices. A decision that for months has cost them many criticisms. Both by the users, the main affected, and by those responsible for the different platforms that currently exist.

Therefore, it was logical that sooner or later the company would make changes to the rules of the App Store to allow this type of game option. Also, make no mistake, this was something they were interested in doing themselves. Because gaming via streaming is the future and it will be an important source of income . So, imagine how much they can generate with their famous and controversial 30% commission.

Well now they have introduced new rules in section 4.9 of the rules of the App Store which is dedicated to the game via streaming. There they basically say that they will allow streaming game as long as all the requirements are met . And although you can check them for yourself on the official website, here is a small summary:

  • Apple will allow games to be streamed as long as they are delivered individually. That is, one app for each game. Although it will allow there to be an app catalog of the service so that the user can have a quick view of all the available titles
  • Games must contain the necessary metadata for users to find them in App Store searches
  • In turn, these games will have their own page within the store so that users can rate them individually.
  • Games should also offer support for Parental Control and Screen Time tools
  • You will have to use in-app purchases to unlock extra features or functionalities

Microsoft doesn’t like Apple’s rules

Read in a fast plan they seem a complete nonsense , because a service with a catalog with 100 games would have to send 100 apps for review. For this reason, Microsoft itself has already declared that this will break the user experience. And they are right, because the idea is to use these services in the same way as Netflix, Spotify or similar. That is, to be able to jump from one game to another quickly as you would from a movie or song.

However, Apple must also be given part of the reason. Because in this way everything will be known to the user accustomed to the platform. And that will facilitate, in case of being a father, mother or guardian, the management of each title installed on the minor’s device.

In short, that Apple allows the game via streaming is great news. The one that does it so restrictively at first glance not so much anymore. So we will have to see how everything progresses, if there are changes or modifications that give more flexibility and convince everyone. So that users like you and us can enjoy these attractive game proposals from the iPhone or iPad.
