Late last month, Microsoft released Windows 10 21H1, the first 2021 update to the operating system. This is a minor update, a patch focused on fixing bugs and debugging the 2004 operating system update released just over a year ago. As with all new versions of the OS, this new version comes through Windows Update as an option. However, depending on the version you use, Microsoft may forcefully install the update on your PC.
All versions of Windows 10 prior to 2020 are no longer supported. And unfortunately, there are still a large number of users using some like the 1909. This is a danger, as there are many security flaws that are putting the safety of users at risk. Even the 2004 version of Windows 10 will be out of support in less than 6 months, which is, again, a danger.
Despite having promised in the past that it would not do so, Microsoft has returned to its old ways, ” for the sake of users .” And, all those who are using unsupported versions of Windows 10, or versions like 2004 that are about to end such support, will be forcibly updated to 21H1.
Windows 10 21H1 is force installed
New versions of Windows are often released in waves. This means that users with more modern and up-to-date hardware receive it first, leaving computers with older hardware, or potentially conflicting configurations , second. With each wave, Microsoft is debugging the update to avoid problems when downloading and installing the new version.
As we have said, on December 14 of this year , Windows 10 20H1, the popular 2004 version, comes to an end of support. And, to prevent users from being unsupported, Microsoft has begun to forcibly download and install the update to users. Although this does not affect 100% of users, more and more are receiving the new version of the OS in this way.
We remember that 21H1 is a minor update . This one does not bring major changes or news compared to version 2004 or 20H2, but rather focuses on bug fixes and OS debugging to ensure the best possible experience. The update is downloaded and installed in just a few seconds, so, after restarting, we will have the PC up to date.
Block updates by force
Although there should be no reason to do this, since we must always try to use the latest version of the operating system, if we do not want to forcibly install the update it is possible to tell the OS that we do not want to. Of course, as long as we have the Pro edition of Windows 10 installed.
To do this, what we must do is open the group policies through “gpedit.msc” and go to the section “Administrative Templates> Windows Components> Windows Update> Windows Update for Business”. Here, we will select “Select target feature update version” and choose the exact version we want to stay on. We can choose 1909, 2004 or whatever version it is. And, in this way, we can avoid forced updates to Windows 10.
