Why did Android put dessert names aside?

For a whole decade, Google used different dessert names continuously for its famous operating system. But, the big surprise came when in 2019 a new version of Android was announced, but without any reference to a sweet . Just a numerical figure was used so that people would know which version would arrive on their smartphones.

To the surprise of many, some members of the Mountain View company, in charge of the operating system, argued the main reason why it was decided to leave aside for the well-known software. However, something seemed to change with the arrival of its next version, since it did come accompanied by a characteristic reference, but the manufacturer’s tradition was no longer the same , it had changed.

Are dessert names used?

Just two months ago, we were able to get to know what could become the nomenclature of the next version of Google’s operating system, and we are not referring to the one that is about to be officially launched, but Android 13 . Tiramisu would be the code name that the manufacturer has used internally to refer to this update, which obviously has no release date. But then, are they still using candy names or not?

The answer is yes and no. Basically, the US company decided to put aside the public use of these characteristic names. In this way, the references to the different desserts that could be found in various regions of the world were discontinued. This decision was made after users stated over the years that the world, having so many cultures and languages, was unknown where the name came from. For this reason, Android 10 came into our lives without a dessert name in a public way, although during its development it was renamed Quince Tart.

Although, the next version of the operating system did get it again, but without the use they previously made of this name. Formerly, the tradition was clear, the avatar and the name were associated for the general public, that is, if the system had the Oreo nomenclature, it was associated with this cookie. But, as of the 2019 version, only the same system logo was fixed for its future versions.

Although still, today, we can talk about names like Snow Cone for Android 12 or Red Velvet Cake for Android 11. However, these are used internally by the manufacturer to distinguish one from the other. For this reason, we can find them, but they are not used publicly since Google preferred to have a name that everyone could easily understand.
