Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS: New Linux Maintenance Release

Ubuntu is the favorite Linux distribution among users who are beginning to take the first steps within this alternative operating system to Windows. The Canonical distro strikes a balance between ease of use and keeping the essence of Linux. The latest version of this distro that has seen the light of day has been Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, a very important version that will offer users 5 years of support. And, as part of its maintenance, Canonical has just released the first major update since the launch of this distro last April: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS .

Ubuntu has two types of versions. The first type are the normal versions, those that have a support of 9 months, are used to experiment with new packages and new features, and force users to update every 6 months to new versions. And the second type are the LTS versions . These are designed to offer users 5-year support and are designed to offer the highest stability and security, leaving experiments behind.

Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

With Ubuntu 19.10 unsupported for weeks now, the new Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is the only new version that is supported, in addition to the previous LTS 18.04 and 16.04. In order to improve the experience for all its users and allow them to get the most out of their distro, the company has just released a new maintenance version for this Linux: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS.

What’s new in Ubuntu 20.04.1

This new version of Ubuntu does not bring big changes or news, but is mainly focused on correcting errors . Thanks to this new version, users who want to replace Windows with Ubuntu will be able to do so easily, and more comfortably, without having to install all the updates and all the patches that have been published since the launch day of this distro.

Canonical has taken advantage of the release of this new version to improve the experience with the Ubuntu update manager , improving the fluidity of this tool and solving problems that could cause, for example, that it crashes when updating Snap packages . The company has also taken the opportunity to include new NVIDIA server drivers, support for the latest Intel Tiger Lake and microcode to patch vulnerable Skylake processors, among other improvements.

Of course, if we hope to see a new Kernel in this new version, we will be disappointed. Canonical has not updated their Linux kernel, despite having several newer versions to which this distro includes as standard.
