This is the speed of 5G in the main operators

When choosing an operator, one of the criteria that a client may have, beyond price, may also be the quality of navigation and one of the indices that is related to this is speed. Since 5G began to be offered in Spain, all national operators have raised their chests about the increase in speed compared to 4G, but what are the figures for each one?

We are going to see what maximum speeds are recognized as theoretical by each national operator and see who offers the best among Movistar, Vodafone, Yoigo or Orange .

This is the speed of 5G in the main operators

5G speeds in Movistar

At Movistar, 5G runs or flies, continuing our analogy, since it works at two speeds, depending on the spectrum it uses. In the 3.5 GHz band, with which the fastest speeds are achieved, but indoor coverage is more unstable if there are too many obstacles, Movistar already has 5G of up to 1 Gbps in 300 municipalities. In the 700 MHz band, which achieves lower speeds but improves indoor coverage, Movistar already has 5G up to 150 Mbps in another 1,419 towns.

5G SA Movistar móviles

As for the future, Movistar has been the operator that has acquired the most spectrum in the last 26 GHz auction, specifically 1 GHz (5 blocks of 200 MHz), with which it will be able to offer maximum theoretical speeds of around 12 Gbps.

Two speed sections in Vodafone

Vodafone also repeats Movistar’s strategy in terms of the speeds at which 5G serves its customers, with two possibilities (before there were 3, but 2 Mbps was ruled out). The most basic rates offer high-speed data (equivalent to 10 Mbps download and upload).

5G Vodafone

In the case of the Vodafone Red and Unlimited Max rates, 5G browsing is at a download speed of up to 1 Gbps and an upload speed of up to 150 Mbps . The speed is conditional on access to 5G technology, for which it will be necessary to have a mobile terminal compatible with 5G within the Vodafone 5G coverage areas. Otherwise, the maximum speed will be that allowed by the corresponding technology.

Looking ahead, Vodafone has acquired 400 MHz of the 26 GHz spectrum in its respective auction, which would limit the maximum speed available in this operator to around 5 Gbps.

5G speed in Orange

After completing the rearrangement of the 5G spectrum assigned to it at the end of last year, Orange customers can now enjoy a better browsing experience, which will be reflected in a speed increase of 60% more. This can mean speed spikes of up to 1.5 Gbps at times of high data demand. They have recently launched their 5G SA, dubbed 5G+, but among the improvements it represents compared to 5 NSA, the orange operator has not cited an increase in speed.

Orange 5G

As with Vodafone, Orange has acquired 400 MHz of the 26 GHz spectrum in its respective auction, which would also limit the maximum speed available from this operator to around 5 Gbps.

Yoigo promises up to 10 Gbps

If we take a look at the conditions of service that Yoigo has on its website , it tells us the following: «Our 5G network allows download speeds of up to 10 Gbps, with an average speed of between 0.7 and 1.4 Gbps . These speeds are approximate and depend on many factors. There will be moments above average and moments below.

Grupo MásMóvil, to which Yoigo belongs, has not bid in the 26 GHz auction alleging, according to industry sources, that the mmwave spectrum has a very limited relevance for Grupo MásMóvil and that for its objectives, 80 MHz is sufficient of 5G spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band that they have and, in fact, they probably have plenty of, as the future merger with Orange will mean that they will have to part with part of the spectrum.
