SONY launches VRR technology for PS5: requirements and compatible games

We have been waiting almost a year for what SONY has announced today after the acceptance and support that both AMD and NVIDIA gave to VRR technology for their graphics cards and monitors compatible with it. The variable refresh rate or VRR is available this week on PS5 and as such, the Japanese brand has revealed what we will need to be able to enjoy it as well as a list of compatible games to start with, do you have what it takes for the next step in gaming and consoles? ?

It will not be just any update, it is something tremendously expected by players to improve the performance of their PS5 and therefore the expectation is very high. SONY’s official statement gives us a complete vision of what is to come, since not everyone will be able to benefit from this technology even if they receive the relevant update.

SONY launches VRR technology for PS5

SONY PS5 and the VRR, as good as it seems?

From a technical point of view it is, without a doubt, on PC that does not enjoy as much optimization as a console is already a step forward, so on PS5 with its power it should be something that we notice, as long as we meet the requirements that fixes SONY itself.

But before that, it is convenient to understand what VRR is and how it works on the PS5, so we will give you a brief explanation.

VRR

This technology is in charge of dynamically synchronizing the refresh rate of the screen (TV or monitor) with the graphic output of the PS5, in other words, it improves the fluidity of the game by synchronizing the FPS and the times between the iGPU and the television or monitor panel.

This avoids effects such as microstuttering or tearing, so we must experience better playability, not an increase in performance as such, it is different, simply the experience when playing will be more pleasant, more fluid, more natural and that, although it may not seem like it, is an advantage and an improvement when you are competitive.

VRR, requirements and compatible games

SONY has said that games already released on PS5 can be fully optimized to host VRR via a patch, something left up to developers, while future games may include such support at launch, leaving the onus again. of it in the hands of whoever designs it.

After receiving the update on the console (it will arrive in a few days worldwide) VRR will be enabled in compatible games as long as we meet the following requirement: have a TV or monitor compatible with HDMI 2.1 and VRR .

This technology can be disabled if we wish, since it is possible that some titles do not implement it well and it is counterproductive because the experience decreases and you want to return to normal. To do this we will have to enter “Screen and video” and deactivate said VRR.

That said, the titles that will receive their corresponding VRR patch this week are the following:

  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • deathloop
  • destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

This does not imply that VRR cannot be activated in games that do not receive the patch, but it is true that the gaming experience can be reduced or even produce unexpected visual effects. The result may vary depending on the monitor or TV used, so it will be a matter of testing how well it works.
