Rocky Linux: CentOS Successor Development and Release Date

The Linux ecosystem is constantly evolving. Every so often we come across new functions, features, security measures and, above all, new distros that seek to improve this ecosystem and offer users something different, something personal and, above all, something close. This is going to be the new Rocky Linux , a new distro that intends to succeed CentOS after two weeks ago the future of this system was detailed and the community did not like it.

CentOS is one of the most popular and widely used professional and business distributions. This distro is based on Red Hat Enterprise and is positioned as one of the best alternatives to RHEL for those who cannot afford the Red Hat license. This Linux is maintained by the community, and stands out for being a very small system, fully customizable and adaptable and offering both security and stability.

Rocky Linux

A couple of weeks ago, CentOS developers announced plans to change the full development focus of this distro to CentOS Stream. This change takes effect after CentOS Linux 8 reaches the end of its support (in 2021), becoming an upstream development branch for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. In other words, the RHEL guinea pigs .

The community did not like this movement. And neither do many users, since they have started looking for other server Linux distros, such as Ubuntu or SUSE , to replace it. But, if we don’t mind waiting a bit, we’re going to be able to give a new system a chance that will undoubtedly cover all our needs: Rocky Linux.

Rocky Linux, a new distro from the founder of CentOS

Rocky Linux is going to be the new operating system for users, companies and servers created by the founder of CentOS himself. With this new distro they seek to depend less on Red Hat and delegate all its development and maintenance to The Rocky Linux Foundation .

The developers of this Linux are already working to have the first initial version of this system as soon as possible. To make it work independently, they rely on AWS (Amazon Web Services) as the main build platform. At the moment, the compilation will depend on Koji and Module Build Service (MBS), although in the future we will see scripts and tools that will smooth the packaging process.

This distro will be available for all kinds of standard commercial regions, and will even debut on AWS GovCloud and China. Of course, it will also be 100% compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Release date

Its developers, at the moment, have not given clues about the launch of this distro. It is estimated that the first stable version of it could arrive during the second quarter of 2021 , between April and June. However, at the moment there is no official date for this launch.

It is expected that in a few weeks the development sheet for this system will be published and the first installers and repositories will start working. If we want to get our hands on this new and promising Linux before anyone else, we can sign up for the beta from this link .
