Qualcomm May Already Have Permission to Supply Chips to Huawei

Although Huawei seems to remain firm that it is going to follow the path started with HarmonyOS and is not going to return to the arms of Android, even if the US government ends the bank imposed by the Trump administration, something tells us that the brand is waiting like water May new movements regarding the future Biden administration.

Qualcomm Huawei

On May 15, 2019, the US Department of Commerce declared that Huawei and its 70 affiliated companies would be included in its dreaded “Entity List.” This US ban not only prevents the Chinese firm from using a licensed version of Android, but also places it in an unpleasant situation since it cannot work with many other companies, TSMC and Qualcomm among them. Without the approval of the US government, Huawei would not be able to purchase components from US companies.

On August 17 of this year, this sanction was updated but for the worse. The US Department of Commerce issued new rules restricting Huawei’s right to use products from other chipmakers, and the ban was even extended to non-US companies. After the ban was implemented on September 15, Huawei phones and other brand products had to face a much more serious problem than not being able to use Android: not having available processors to bring their phones to life.

Apparently, this situation, even though the change of government has not yet occurred in the North American country, could be beginning to reverse.

Qualcomm, to the rescue of Huawei

According to reports from the Korean media 36Kr , the lack of chips that plagued Huawe i will be resolved soon, as a source close to the Chinese manufacturer said that Qualcomm has obtained the license to supply processors to Huawei, which means that high-end phones of the firm’s P and Mate series will be equipped with the latest Snapdragon processors.

Other recent reports also indicate that companies such as Intel, AMD, Samsung Display, Sony, and many others have obtained permission from the US government to continue doing business with Huawei. Therefore, TSMC has resumed production of chips above 28nm (including 28nm) for Huawei. On November 5, Qualcomm declared that it had formally submitted an application for the supply license to Huawei and it seems that it has already been approved.

The most notable change that this new license would imply is that the Kirin manufactured by TSMC would no longer star in the interior of the future top of the brand range, but Qualcomm.
