Video game consoles are not for everyone. That is why, contrary to the big companies, some developers work on the creation of what we know as emulators , programs that are responsible for emulating the hardware of the console in order to load their games on the computer. Although there are a large number of emulators for classic consoles, it is true that it is increasingly difficult to emulate the latest generation consoles. But, despite all odds, we already have the first functional PS5 emulator. And it’s totally free.
Kyty is one of the best PlayStation 4 emulators that we can find on the net. In addition to being open source, it is one of the most advanced emulators when it comes to loading commercial games. This has a very simple interface and, despite having been in development for a short time, it is one of the most advanced and promising.
A few months ago, its main developer showed interest in the PlayStation 5, a console that has only been on the market for a couple of years and, as expected, has not yet been exploited enough for external developers to know how to create an emulator. However, although no one expected to see it so soon, a little over a month ago Kyty received a new version, 0.2.0. And this was characterized by being able to emulate the PlayStation 5 .
Kyty: promising PS5 emulator
While this emulator is capable of loading several commercial games, the complexity of the PS4 means that some games have serious graphical glitches, crashes, and FPS drops. Furthermore, it still lacks some very important features, such as audio input/output, MP4 support or network connection. But, little by little, it is advancing in the development.
With the arrival of version 0.2.0, finally this emulator presented the first functional emulation of PS5. Of course, it may not be as we expect (at least for now).
This emulator is capable of loading homebrew programs designed for this PlayStation 5. This means that we do not expect to be able to load a Horizon Forbidden West, or a Demon Souls right now. We are still a long way from being able to play these and other titles with Kyty. But being able to load code already designed for this console is a very important step. And we can say that yes, the PS5 can already be emulated.
How to test the emulator
To test this PS4 and PS5 emulator, what we have to do is download it from its GitHub repository . Although the emulator is designed to be used on both Windows and Linux, its developer recommends that we compile it directly on a 64-bit Windows 10, to avoid problems. Additionally, we will need some external dependencies for the build to complete, such as the Vulkan SDK and Qt.
Kyty has managed to make a lot of progress in a very short time. But it still has a long way to go, starting with offering greater compatibility with commercial PS4 games. The problem is that, as it begins to focus on the PS5, in the end it will fall in the middle, not being perfect to emulate either of the two consoles.
