PS5 DualSense: How the New Adaptive Triggers Work

triggers of DualSense

We have already seen that the new PlayStation 5 controller will not work on PS4 no matter how hard you try (unless you connect it to a PC and control the console through Remote Play), but if there was something we wanted to know about, they were their guts. And that’s just what TronicsFix has done .

How do the triggers work?

The adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller will offer an adaptive travel that will vary depending on what we are experiencing in the game. Thus, it will not be the same pressing the trigger of a gun as stepping on the accelerator of a car, and that is where this DualSense aims to be as original as possible.

Taking into account that PS5 is not yet on the market, there are many doubts and unknowns that exist about this new system, but luckily, the YouTube channel TronicsFix has decided to gut one of these new controls (remember that they are already up to sale in the United States) to know in detail what is hidden inside.

A very careful design

The first thing we can see in this exploded view is that the design of the control has been taken care of a lot, since the fixing screws are perfectly hidden under a front trim that surrounds the handles. This results in a cleaner and more uniform design that is quite pleasing to the eye.

When we removed the first part of the case, we came across a higher capacity battery that, as we already knew, will have a surprising capacity of 1,560 mAh, a rather significant jump from the 1,000 mAh of the DualShock 4.

The secret of the triggers

As we have already discussed, the L2 and R2 triggers will include the new adaptive resistance technology, however we do not know exactly how this feature works. There is today. As we can see in the TronicsFix video , an endless screw and a gear are responsible for moving a part that will modify the trigger travel.

In this way, the game will be able to determine how far the trigger can move, in order to offer resistance when pressing it more or less. But in addition to feeling the pressure or limits in the action of pressing the button, there will be another sensation involved in this technology.

We are talking about the vibrations that will occur when undergoing continuous pressure changes in the trigger. It is just what we can see in the video shared via Twitter by Erik Fossum, since the high revolutions of the internal motor cause extremely fast changes, which will produce very sharp movements of the trigger. You know that moment when you pull the trigger on the machine gun in Call of Duty and don’t let go? Well, with DualSense you will feel as if you are on the very battlefield.

Things that don’t change from PS4

But in addition to all these changes, there are things that do not change. The analog sticks, for example, appear to be exactly the same, and TronicsFix points out that they could again drift over time. The touch pad circuitry is also repeated and in general everything related to the keypad and main board.

Even so, the controller is quite a generational departure, so we are looking forward to trying it out as soon as possible to tell you what it feels like to have it in your hand and play with it.
