Google Drive is one of the most popular cloud storage services. We can use it in its web version, as well as in a program for the different operating systems. In this article we are going to explain how to use it as a CDN and distribute static files.

What is a CDN

First of all we are going to explain what a CDN is and what it is for . The acronyms come from Content Delivery Network, which in Spanish can be translated as Content Distribution Network. It is basically an overlay network of computers containing copies of data. This data is placed at different points in a network and in this way to maximize the bandwidth.

Its mission is to allow users to access that content . The type of content can be very diverse. We can talk about a web page, multimedia files, applications, communication media … They appear as a solution to the problems derived from a centralized web.

Among these objectives we can mention the fact of reducing the response time or reducing the loss of information. It has advantages in reducing server load, latency, or increasing bandwidth.

How to use Google Drive as a CDN

We have explained in general lines what a CDN is and now we are going to show how we can convert Google Drive into one. In this way we can deliver static files to a website or web application. For this we will have to use a tool called PoweredBy.Cloud . It is a free program.

This application is used to access our Google Drive account, the files that we have stored there, and be able to deliver them through a CDN. It creates a specific URL in a subdomain and in this way generates file URLs and we can use them as a resource in an app or web.

We are going to see how to use it in Google Drive as it is the most used platform among home users. However, we can also do the same with OneDrive.

The first thing we have to do is enter their website and create an account. We will have to put our e-mail address and they will automatically send us a link to create the account. This email may end up in the Spam folder, so be careful.

Later it will ask us to choose between Google Drive and OneDrive. In our case we have given Google Drive. We put the email address and password. Later they send us a link to verify the account.

PoweredBy.Cloud

Once we continue with the process, it will request access to the account.

After this we will have to return to the initial screen, where we select between Google Drive and OneDrive, but this time we click on Add Site , which appears at the top right. There we will have to put the name of the site (we can put letters and numbers) and below select the Google Drive or OneDrive account.

Agregar un sitio web

Later we just have to give Add . It will automatically open a new page where it shows us the information as we see in the image below. Keep in mind that we can add up to a maximum of three sites. We can eliminate them whenever we want.

We will only have to copy the generated URL and use it where we are interested. We can add folders and upload files to them. In this way everything will be available at all times. Of course, we must bear in mind that, at least with the current version, you cannot access content that is already in Drive, but only those that we have uploaded from this service.

In short, by following these steps and using the PoweredBy.Cloud tool, we can convert Google Drive into a CDN. This way we will have the possibility to load files quickly where we are interested. For example a web page or an application.
