Use the tray diagram for your exact phone, match each card to its marked slot and never force the tray closed. There is no single SIM-and-microSD layout shared by every phone. The position of the metal contacts can differ too.
Check what your phone actually supports
Some phones have one physical SIM slot, some have two, and some use eSIM instead. Many phones have no memory-card slot at all. A second SIM position is not automatically a microSD slot.

Before you open the tray
- Find the exact model’s manual or setup guide on the maker’s website.
- Back up anything important on an existing memory card. Power the phone off if the maker’s instructions call for it; this is also a sensible way to avoid removing a card while it is being written to.
- Remove a case if it blocks the tray.
- Identify the tray’s eject hole from the diagram. A nearby microphone hole is not an eject hole.
- Use the supplied eject tool, or an alternative approved by the maker.
Press gently in the specified direction. If the tray will not release, stop and get help instead of pushing harder. Apple’s SIM instructions also warn against forcing a tray and against using a tray from a different model.
Place the cards in the marked positions
- SIM: match its clipped corner to the shaped recess.
- microSD: use the marked memory-card position and the contact direction shown in the manual.
- Double-sided tray: check both faces; do not assume every card goes on the same side.
- Hybrid slot: do not stack a SIM and memory card in the same position.
The card should lie flat and stay within its recess. Do not cut a card, glue two cards together or use a loose adapter to make it fit. Special memory-card formats are not interchangeable with microSD just because their dimensions look similar.
Slide the tray back in gently
Keep the tray level and return it in the correct orientation. If it catches, remove it and check the cards again. A card that has slipped out of its recess can damage the tray or contacts when pushed.
A closed tray should sit properly against the phone. If the tray or its seal is damaged, do not assume the phone retains its original resistance to water.
What if the phone does not recognize a card?
For a SIM, check that the line is enabled and that the carrier has activated it. If the SIM works but you only see LTE instead of 5G, our 5G settings guide explains that separate issue.
For microSD, confirm the supported card type and capacity. Do not accept a format prompt until needed files are backed up: formatting can erase the card. If the tray is bent, a card is stuck or detection keeps failing, contact the phone maker rather than repeatedly forcing it.
