Microsoft Eliminates Maps and Movies & TV Apps from Windows 11

Microsoft has been receiving criticism from users who are uncomfortable with the multitude of native applications included in their operating systems. While some of these apps are genuinely useful for daily tasks, many go unused, prompting Microsoft to make decisions about retaining or replacing them.

Recently, Microsoft updated the Video Editor application in both Windows 10 and Windows 11. They removed its functionality and encouraged users to switch to Clipchamp, another Microsoft-owned application. Clipchamp offers a wide range of features, but the catch is that users must subscribe to a paid plan for full access.

Now, Microsoft is taking a different approach by discontinuing two more applications. With build 25987 of Windows 11, Microsoft announced that the Maps and Movies & TV applications would no longer be included in the official ISO downloaded through their distribution channel.

However, this doesn’t mean that these applications will vanish from your PC. Instead, they will still be available through the official Microsoft Store. According to Microsoft, despite their removal from the new Windows builds, both Maps and Movies & TV apps will continue to receive support.

The Maps application will no longer offer offline map downloads after the end of 2023. This feature was niche and used by a small audience, so its discontinuation won’t impact most users. Those who relied on it may need to seek alternative solutions.

The Movies & TV application allowed users to access a vast library of movies and TV series for purchase or rent on Windows computers, similar to platforms like Apple, Google, and Amazon. It also permitted playback of locally stored video files, supporting various formats. While it wasn’t as feature-rich as VLC for playback, it was a convenient in-built option.

Movies & TV - Windows

Considering the popularity of other movie and TV streaming services, it’s understandable that Microsoft decided to remove it from future Windows installations. Microsoft’s attempt to compete with established streaming platforms would be challenging without a strong mobile presence akin to iOS and Android.

For those looking for alternatives to Microsoft’s Movies & TV app, VLC is the top choice for playing a wide range of video and audio formats. Amazon Prime Video is ideal for buying or renting TV series and movies if you are already a subscriber. Alternatively, you can explore Rakuten TV or Apple and Google stores, though platform transitions may pose challenges.

Finding alternatives for offline map downloads is more complex. Google Maps primarily supports mobile devices for map access. However, you can use the Google Earth application on Windows for this purpose. Another option is to visit the Ministry of Transport, Mobility, and Urban Agenda website to download various maps of the Iberian Peninsula. Alternatively, you can utilize KMZ files to access specific maps as needed.
