How to Make a Backup of Your Data and Files on iPad

Therefore it is important to be able to make a backup of your data and files stored with a backup copy of the iPad. We tell you how you can do it.

Backup to iPadOS through iCloud

In 2019 the iPad went from carrying iOS as an operating system to carrying iPadOS. However both systems share the same base, so if you have an older iPad or that is not updated to the latest versions of iPadOS, you can also make a backup using iCloud. And in this copy that can be made from the iPad itself , all kinds of information are saved: wallpaper, installed apps, contacts, Safari bookmarks, settings and more that you can select to be backed up in the backup.

But how are these backups made? Well, by default, iPad uploads a copy to iCloud every time they are connected to the power and with a WiFi connection. However, they can be done manually by following these steps:

  1. Go to iPad Settings .
  2. Click on your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Click now on iCloud .
  4. Select all the data you want to backup in the backup (Photos, Contacts, Calendar, etc.)
  5. Go to “Copy to iCloud .
  6. Click on “Backup now” . You can also enable and disable automatic copying.

The backup save process may take several minutes depending on the size of the backup. When finished, you will see a legend appear indicating the date and time of that copy.

Of course, some problem may appear in the backup due mainly to lack of storage space in iCloud. Normally Apple gives 5GB to each user who registers with an Apple ID, but these may be insufficient on many occasions. Therefore it is advisable to acquire more space, for which there are the following rates:

  • 50 GB of storage: € 0.99 per month.
  • 200 GB of storage: € 2.99 per month.
  • 2 TB of storage: € 9.99 per month.

IPadOS backup on Mac or Windows computer

In addition to iCloud, Apple offers other methods to backup your iPad data. This requires a computer, regardless of whether it has macOS as an operating system or a Windows PC.

If you have a Mac with macOS Catalina or later you must follow these steps:

  1. Connect the iPad to the Mac via cable.
  2. Open Finder and you will see that on the left side, next to other folders, your iPad appears. If this is the first time you connect the iPad to the Mac, you may be asked to click on the “Trust” button on both the Mac and the iPad itself and also enter the security code.
  3. Activate the option “Save a backup of all iPad data on this Mac”.
  4. Click now on “Backup now”.

If you have a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier you must follow these steps:

  1. Connect the iPad to the Mac via cable.
  2. Open iTunes on the Mac.
  3. Click on the iPad icon at the top of the screen.
  4. Activate the option that allows you to save a copy on this computer.
  5. Click now on “Backup now”.

If you have a Windows PC you must follow these steps:

  1. Connect the iPad to the PC via cable.
  2. Open iTunes If you do not have it installed on your computer you can download it from the Apple website .
  3. Click on the iPad icon at the top of the screen.
  4. Activate the option that allows you to save a copy on this computer.
  5. Click now on “Backup now”.

It should be noted that the copies of the iPad will be stored on your computer and will also serve to restore the iPad in the future with that copy. Of course, you should not disconnect the iPad from the computer while the backup process is taking place or else you will have to start the whole process again.
