Luca (Pixar): Trailer, Story, Cast and Curiosities about the Plot

The first official trailer for Luca , the latest from Pixar, is already in circulation and with this we have learned a little better what the studio’s next great animated adventure will tell us. The most interesting thing of all is that this proposal could represent an important before and after within the franchise and is that the main character, although not clearly manifest, could be the first homosexual protagonist in a house movie – we have seen secondary or short, but not beyond that. We tell you everything we know about its beautiful history and the moral that it would hide behind.

Luca, the magic of summers in Italy

We knew that Pixar had to release a new film this year and that its premiere will take place in the summer, so its official preview was at the drop of the hat. No sooner said than done. The first trailer of the film is already in circulation, thanks to which we can know much better what the plot of this new story is about.

And the fact is that if there is something in particular about Pixar’s proposals, it is that they are, above all, windows to incredible stories very well told and that always connect with the public, both children and adults . Far from the proposals of Disney, its owner, much more focused on a younger viewer, Pixar has managed to give us the right dose of innocence always mixed with winks and situations that only the oldest can understand fully.

Luca (Pixar)

Clear examples of this can be found in films such as Up (often the beginning), Toy Story or even Soul, the latest production of the house in which they talk about personal motivations and the search for identity , always from that halo that makes a child can enjoy it 100% without understanding all its importance.

Luca - Pixar

With Luca it seems that we will live the same thing again. In it we will meet a boy who together with his new best friend live an intense and unforgettable summer in a coastal town on the Italian Riviera. What nobody knows is that in reality these two children are actually sea monsters, capable of transforming into humans when they leave the water, to fit in with each other. And that is where the great moral of this story could be. What is Pixar trying to tell us this time?

Synopsis of the film

The official synopsis of the Pixar film reads as follows:

Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated film is a coming of age story about a boy who experiences an unforgettable summer filled with endless ice cream, pasta, and scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his new best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a very deep secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the surface of the water.

First homosexual protagonist?

It would not be the first time that Pixar has introduced a homosexual character in its films, although they have never received much attention. In Onward, the police officer Specter, a minor character in the film, is in a relationship with another woman. Likewise, the franchise has a short called Out (Going out) in which its protagonist is gay – in fact, the plot revolves around hiding his condition from his family – and that generated a stir (due to the novelty it entailed) when it premiered on Disney + within the so-called SparkShorts.

Now, although the company has not openly confirmed it or the trailer indicates it, it seems that Luca would also be homosexual. This is assured by several specialized media in the industry that firmly maintain that their director wanted to speak on this occasion about the acceptance of others and the need that some people sometimes feel to hide their true identity in order to fit in.

Luca - Pixar

Some even call it the Call me by your name of the animated world and this film directed by Luca Guadagnino and released in 2017 that has so many fans speaks precisely of the relationship of a teenager and a young man who meet one summer in Italy and they live a beautiful love story.

The Pixar film will not go “that far” -it would be a real surprise to be wrong-, but it would take advantage of its narrative capacity to take us to a context that unfortunately today many people from the LGTBIQ + collective continue to live.

Direction and cast by Luca

Enrico Casarosa is in charge of directing this new Pixar film, ensuring that what he tells draws a lot from his own experiences during his summers in Italy (he was born in Genoa). In one of them he met his best friend, when he was 11 years old, a very different boy from him who helped him grow and marked him forever.

Casarosa has been working at Pixar for years and in fact has collaborated on other very famous titles such as the aforementioned Up or the popular Coco, set in Mexican culture. It has even been nominated in 2012 for an Oscar in the category for best animated short by La Luna .

Luca - Pixar

In the original English version, Jacob Tremblay (the boy from the wonderful Room) voices Luca Paguro himself, while Jack Dylan Grazar (It, Beautiful Boy , We are who we are ) does the same with his friend, Alberto Scorfano . Maya Rudolph (Forever) voices Daniela and Kim Gaffigan (Tesla) voices Lorenzo.

As for the production, its manager is Andrea Warren, who has titles such as Lava or Cars 3 on her resume.
