More and more users, married to Windows 10 and not having the possibility to continue using Windows 7 with support, are looking for a way out of the Linux ecosystem. On the net we can find a large number of Windows-like Linux distros that seek to end usability problems by offering users a familiar environment similar to that of the Microsoft operating system. And one of the most interesting alternatives, especially for light computers, is Linux Lite .
Linux Lite is a Linux distro based on Ubuntu LTS specially created to be a gateway between Windows and Linux. This distro comes with a large amount of software installed by default (such as LibreOffice, VLC, Firefox and Steam, among other programs), as well as a desktop with an appearance very similar to that of Windows 7.

In order to continue growing and conquering users, this distro must continue to be updated periodically. And as part of this continuous update, a few hours ago we just received “Emerald”, the new version of Linux Lite 5.0.

What’s New in Linux Lite 5.0 “Emerald”
This new version of Linux Lite comes to users as a major update, full of changes and news of all kinds with which to continue improving as a Linux distro alternative to Windows.
One of the most important novelties of this new version is that it has finally been made compatible with UEFI and Secure Boot systems . Users who are going to use Linux Lite will no longer have to disable these measures on the system, making the boot much more secure. During startup, the distro now checks the integrity of the system (check that we can cancel with Control + C). And we will also be able to see new OEM options within the boot menu.
Of course, all the packages and programs that make up this Linux distro have been updated . However, we must emphasize that, when installing the distro from scratch, we will now find a new option that will allow us to download additional third-party software .
Security remains one of the base pillars of this distro. And to facilitate its configuration for all types of users , the classic GUFW firewall has been replaced by FireWallD , a much more intuitive and simple alternative, although with fewer configurations. A firewall status indicator has also been added to Lite Widget.
Other changes that have come with Linux Lite 5.0 “Emerald” and that we should highlight are:
- Added support for HiDPI.
- Hardware information section expanded.
- Zim (note program) replaces the old Cherrytree.
- Pinta program removed.
- Fixed all kinds of bugs and errors detected in previous versions.
- Dual architecture support.
- The internal programs have been updated to GTK3 and Python3.
- New options on the welcome screen.
- New options on the logout screen.
New update notifications have also been added so that all users are always up to date.

This new version is now available for free to any user interested in installing and testing it. We can download the new ISO without paying anything from its website . Once the ISO is lowered, what we have to do is burn the ISO image to a USO memory (for example, with Etcher) and start the computer of our choice with it.
In order to use this distro we have to meet the following requirements:
- 1 GHz processor.
- 768 MB of RAM.
- 8 GB of space on the HDD or SSD.
Anyway, it is recommended to have a 1.5 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM and 20 GB of storage space to be able to use the entire distro normally.
