RPCS3 is a free, open-source PlayStation 3 emulator that can run supported PS3 games on a PC. You need a compatible computer, the emulator, Sony‘s PS3 system software and a properly prepared copy of your game. Downloading RPCS3 alone does not include games or guarantee smooth play.

Check your game and PC first
Find the exact title in the project’s compatibility list. Read its current status and game-specific notes. Reaching an opening screen is different from being able to finish a game without major problems.
Next, compare your PC with the current requirements in the RPCS3 Quickstart guide. Avoid relying on an old minimum CPU or RAM list: requirements and performance change with the game and emulator build. Our Windows specifications guide shows where to check basic PC details.
Download RPCS3 from the project
- Use the official RPCS3 website or the links in the project’s GitHub repository.
- Choose the download for your operating system and follow the current setup instructions.
- If the Windows download is an archive, extract it into its own folder before starting the program. Do not run it from inside a compressed preview window.
- Open RPCS3 and complete its first-run prompts.
You do not need a “full games included” installer from a download site. Keep the emulator and your game backups separate so you know where each item came from and can update the program without confusing it with your saved files.
Install the official PS3 firmware
- Open Sony’s PS3 system-software page and download the official update file.
- In RPCS3, choose File > Install Firmware.
- Select
PS3UPDAT.PUPand let the installation finish.
Use the PS3 firmware, not a PS4 or PS5 update. You are installing it into the emulator here; you do not need to follow Sony’s USB-folder steps for updating a physical PS3.
Add your PS3 game files
Follow the developer’s game-dumping guide for a copy you are allowed to use. Disc and digital games need different preparation, and an arbitrary ISO, ZIP or RAR file is not automatically ready for RPCS3.
For a prepared disc-game folder, use the emulator’s game-adding option and point it at the folder described in that guide. For a supported digital-game dump, use the package-install option and supply any required license data from your own copy. Keep the full folder structure intact.
If you cannot copy a large game file to a USB drive, the drive’s format may be the problem. Our file-size limits guide explains FAT32’s single-file limit and why free space alone is not the whole answer.
Set up a controller and start the game
Connect your controller, open RPCS3’s Pads configuration and choose the matching input handler and device. Check that the buttons respond, save the profile and launch the game from the game list.
The project’s controller guide explains supported devices. Begin with default game settings. Change options only when the title’s current compatibility notes recommend it.
If a game will not boot or runs slowly
