Old Internet Explorer downloads are not a supported way to add IE 6, IE 8 or IE 11 to a Windows 11 PC. If an old website asks for Internet Explorer, try Microsoft Edge‘s built-in IE mode. If you need the exact old browser for a retro-computing project, use a separate old Windows setup with a valid license.
The right choice depends on whether you need to open one old site or actually run an old version of Windows and its browser. Those are different tasks.

Can you download Internet Explorer 6, 7 or 8?
You can still find archived installers, but finding a file is only part of the job. The installer must match the old Windows release, service pack, language and system type it was made for. A download marked 64-bit does not make it compatible with every modern 64-bit PC.
For a retro-PC project, start with original installation or recovery media that you are licensed to use. The bundled browser depends on the Windows release. If you need a separate installer, look for a genuine Microsoft package for that exact system and check its publisher signature where available.
- Do not assume an archive or download directory has checked every uploaded file.
- Skip download managers, repackaged installers and files that ask you to turn off antivirus protection.
- A valid signature can help identify the publisher, but it does not make an obsolete browser safe for everyday use.
- Check whether a package is a full installer or an old web setup program. A small setup file may depend on download services that are no longer available.
There is no supported IE 6, IE 7 or IE 8 installation path for normal browsing on Windows 10 or 11. Avoid guides that promise to restore these browsers simply by running an installer in compatibility mode.
What about Internet Explorer 9, 10 or 11?
Internet Explorer is tied to Windows components, so it is not interchangeable across Windows versions like an ordinary standalone app. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer lifecycle FAQ explains how browser support follows the operating system.
IE 11 was the last major Internet Explorer version. There is no official Internet Explorer 12. On Windows 11, use Edge IE mode for legacy sites rather than searching for a separate IE desktop browser.
The IE 11 desktop app lost support on the mainstream Windows 10 channel in June 2022 and was permanently disabled on certain Windows 10 versions. Some LTSC and Server editions follow different component-support rules, so check the exact edition with your IT team. Open an old site in Edge IE mode
Microsoft’s current IE-mode instructions distinguish personal PCs from devices managed by an organization.
- Open Microsoft Edge and enter
edge://settings/defaultBrowserin its address bar. - Under Internet Explorer compatibility, set Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode to Allow, if available. Restart Edge if asked.
- On a personal PC with Edge 141 or later, find Internet Explorer mode pages and select Add a page.
- Enter the specific site’s address, add it, then reload that site.
- Check for the IE-mode indicator beside the address bar.
On a work-managed PC, your administrator may control the site list or the Reload in Internet Explorer mode menu option. If settings are missing or greyed out, ask IT to add the site. Changing browser flags or installing an old IE package is not a reliable fix.
IE mode uses the IE 11 engine that displays web pages inside Edge and can handle several older document modes. It is not a perfect replacement for testing the exact original IE 6 or IE 8 browser. Microsoft’s IE-mode overview explains its features and limits.

If you need the exact old browser
A virtual machine lets an old operating system run separately from your everyday Windows installation. You still need installation media and any required license, plus a virtual-machine setup that supports that old system.
For offline testing, keep the virtual machine disconnected from the internet. Leave shared folders and clipboard sharing off unless your test needs them, and save a snapshot before making changes. A virtual machine limits some exposure; it does not fix security holes in an old browser or make untrusted installers safe.

On affected Windows 10 versions, that follows the IE desktop retirement. Use IE mode for the specific legacy site rather than trying to undo the redirect.
Is a portable Internet Explorer download a good solution?
Do not assume it is an official Microsoft release. A repackaged browser can still depend on Windows components and can carry the same security and compatibility problems as other old copies.
Will IE mode fix every old website?
No. A site may also need old add-ons, network access or changes from its owner. Give the site owner or IT team the exact address and error instead of installing several old browser versions.
