After a while your social media username might not be so perfect anymore. Changing your username on Twitter is easy, whether you want to refresh your profile or update an old choice. In this guide we will guide you to update your Username through but still keep all your old posts and followers intact.
Why Change Your Username?
When we first enter our digital lives, many of us pick our usernames out of the hat at the drop of a hat, often choosing generic options offered by the platform. Perhaps your account is evolving and you’d like a username that better reflects you or your brand. The good news is that like X, your username can be changed as many times as you want, while retaining your followers and posts.
Changing the Username on Your Account
Before you even start the process it’s a fantastic idea to sit down and think of some username options you might be happy with. As usernames are unique, your first choice might be taken. If you’re unable to pick the exact name, try placing underscores, numbers, or other variants to your desired name.
When creating a new username, make sure it follows X’s username rules:
The name must be between 4 and 15 characters.
It will only accept letters, numbers and underscores, no spaces, special symbols.
How to Change Your Username on X
Now that you’ve got a new username in mind, follow these steps to make the change:
- Log in to X: Go to the X platform on website or app.
- Navigate to More Options: To the left-hand column, click ‘More options’.
- Go to Settings: Click on Settings and privacy from the menu.
- Access Your Account Settings: To access account settings, click on “Your account”.
- Select Account Information: Click on «Account Information» now.
- Enter Your Password: Before continuing, please enter your account password for the security verification.
- Edit Username: The first thing it will show you is the “Username.” Click on it.
- Choose Your New Username: On the next screen, type in your new desired username and confirm that it meets the character and formatting requirements.
- Save Your Changes: After that, type in a unique username and click to confirm and save the changes.

What Happens After You Change Your Username?
Changing your username on X will not change the content on your profile. Your posts, your followings, and your followers will not be affected. All that changes is what name comes after the “@” symbol — nothing of your social media presence gets lost.
But if you want to totally reset your account (for example to clear out all your posts so you can start with zero followers) you’ll have to make a new account. The sad part is however, X does not have a feature that allows me to remove all my posts at once so mass deleting content is very time consuming if I were to do it manually.
