Your X username is the unique handle after @; your display name is a separate profile field. If you only want a different visible name, you may not need to change the handle or profile URL.
Check the current handle rules
X’s username guide specifies more than four characters and a maximum of 15, using letters, numbers and underscores. That means a new handle should meet the service’s current 5–15 character rule, rather than the four-character minimum in older advice.
Change the username
- Open X’s Settings and privacy.
- Find the account/username controls. The web and mobile navigation can differ.
- Follow any required steps to confirm it’s your account in the official app or website.
- Enter an available handle and save using the offered control.
- Open your profile and confirm the new username and URL.
Follow the current help page and prompts if the interface differs. Do not assume every account can make unlimited changes without additional checks.

Update the places where people find you
- Replace the profile link on your website, email signature and other profiles.
- Check printed or saved QR codes that point to the old address.
- Tell followers about the new handle if it could be confusing.
- Check whether your account’s verification status limits username changes before changing a name your business relies on.
Do not expect a username change to erase old posts or start a new account. Likewise, old links should not be assumed to redirect permanently to you once someone else can take the old handle.
