All trends come back, and Decentraland is nothing more than a modern version of what we saw with Second Life two decades ago. Decentraland is one of the most ambitious metaverses we’ve seen to date. Not only is it a very successful and very advanced project, but it also starts with the advantage of being built with blockchain technology. If you’re curious about the worlds in this universe but don’t quite know how to get started , take note.
Hardware and software requirements
To access Decentraland you will have to enter its website through a browser on a computer . At the moment, the game is not available for mobile devices, although they are working on it.
Decentraland does not use a registry system, but does so by connecting a token wallet like Metamask. To have a good experience, it is recommended to use a computer with a second generation Intel Core i3 processor or higher, 8 GB of RAM and an Nvidia GT 730 or higher graphics card (or an equivalent model from AMD). In addition, it is essential to use an updated browser —especially for security when connecting the cryptocurrency wallet— and an Internet connection with at least 10 Mb download.
The first steps in Decentraland
- Install the Metamask add-on for Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Load your Ethereum wallet by adding your word list.
- Go to https://decentraland.org and click on ‘Get Started’.
- The wizard will ask you if you want to connect the wallet or continue in guest mode. You can play both ways, but you will only have access to all the features with the first method. If you choose to connect your Metamask wallet, you will be able to pay extra to make your username your own. You only need to have 100 MANA and some Ethereum in your Metamask to pay network commissions.
- Create your avatar. Don’t worry if you’re not convinced, you can edit it later.
- Choose a name, put your email and accept the rules to continue.
- Next, you will arrive at Genesis Plaza , where all Decentraland users spawn. A small robot will appear there that will teach you the basic handling of the game through a tutorial.
- In the tutorial you will learn how to move, chat or use the map. Once you finish the process or get out of there, you will be completely free.
Creation or modification of avatar
You can take care of your avatar as soon as you arrive on the platform for the first time or do it later. If you did that step quickly and you are interested in changing your character’s appearance , go to the start menu and go to Backpack . There the wizard will reappear to modify your look. You will be able to change the clothes but also the skin tone and other aspects of the character. In addition, you can also apply the collectibles that you get while you play.
Keyboard and mouse controls
The handling within Decentraland is quite simple, and it will be quite familiar to you if you play on PC.
- Character View – You will control the camera shot and view of your character by moving your mouse.
- Movement – You can use both the arrow keys on the keyboard and the WASD keys.
- Toggle View – If you want to switch the view between first and third person, press the ‘V’.
- Jump : space bar
- Help & Controls – Press ‘C’.
- Talk to Microphone – Press ‘T’.
- Exit Window – Press ‘Esc’ to return to mouse control outside of the game.
Buy your first LAND and trade items
To buy your first land in Decentraland you will need to have MANA in your Metamask wallet. You can buy the token on any exchange or DeFi and transfer it to your Ethereum token wallet. To make the transaction you can also use the Polygon network, which will save you some money in commissions. You can also earn MANA within Decentraland through their play -to-earn games. Basically, if you don’t want to invest money, you can buy things in this metaverse using your time. Then simply go back to your profile and enter the Market to buy your first land.
The thing is not there. You can dedicate yourself to expanding your plots within the game, but you can also trade objects , get collectibles or use your tokens to access and enjoy the activities that other users of the platform have created.
