Google Chrome doesn’t eat up all my RAM after I do all this

If you want to prevent Google Chrome from using all your RAM memory continuously, there are some tips and tricks that will help us improve this aspect of the browser without stopping using it as usual and accessing all its usual functions.

The solution is in the browser settings. If it is always running, we can reduce memory usage and free up RAM by following some tips.

Google Chrome doesn't eat up all my RAM after I do all this

Configure the browser

We can configure Google Chrome from the settings to activate the hardware acceleration option, this will help not consume all the RAM.

The steps we must follow are the following:

  • Open Google Chrome settings
  • Go to the menu on the left
  • Look for the “System” section
  • You will see three options:
    • Keep running apps in the background when you close Chrome
    • Use hardware acceleration when available
    • Open your computer’s proxy settings

Among these three options, toggle on the “Use hardware acceleration when available” option. This will allow us to reduce RAM memory.

Keep an eye on background apps

If you’re not using Chrome but have left it open, there may be apps running in the background that you should keep an eye on. For that, all we have to do is configure this from the browser settings so that they do not run if you have closed the browser.

  • Open Google Chrome settings
  • Look for the “System” section in the side menu
  • As in the previous case, you will see three options:
    • Keep running apps in the background when you close Chrome
    • Use hardware acceleration when available
    • Open your computer’s proxy settings

The one that interests us here is the first one: Continue running applications in the background when closing Google Chrome. Turn this switch off so that apps don’t keep running and consuming RAM even if you close the browser.

Control and manage tabs

Having many tabs open increases the amount of RAM you use. You can close the ones you are not using. Generally we tend to leave many tabs open continuously even though they are no longer useful for us. Close and open only what you really need at that moment. The rest, open it only when you really need it.

There are also extensions that allow us to close certain tabs and open them only when you need to. For example, the TooManyLabs extension chooses which tab to temporarily close if you want to limit the amount of RAM Chrome uses. The nice thing about the extension is that it not only closes them but then opens them and they are placed exactly where you left them. This way you will avoid reducing the RAM memory but you will be able to have them at hand when you need them without having to look for everything again.

There are other extensions that take care of managing it automatically for you if the tabs are inactive for a while. If you haven’t used them for a while, they deactivate. You choose how long they have to be before they are deactivated or stop working with the TabMemFree app, free for Chrome.
