DGT 3.0: the New App that Will Help Avoid Traffic Jams and Accidents with 5G

Even if we know the route by heart, using Google Maps to make the journeys we do every day is quite useful to know if there are traffic jams, demonstrations or accidents that will make us arrive home later. Now, the DGT wants to promote smart mobility and has announced the creation of the DGT 3.0 app .

This new app prepared by the DGT will be accompanied by the deployment of a large network that will collect all the possible information on Spanish roads to make it available to users in an application, being able to know the vehicles that pass through a road at any given time, weather information to see if there is rain or ice, etc. With this, it seeks to offer a safe and intelligent mobility that allows reducing traffic accidents by 80% .

DGT 3.0

3.5 billion euros of investment by 2050

Its objective is that by the year 2050 there are zero victims on the road , for which the intelligent and autonomous car will be a key element. For this, the system will have 5G as support, and it will begin to be used in less than four years. The goal of the app will be to continue growing until 2050.

The investment in the app and in the technology necessary for it to operate will be 3,500 million euros before 2025, in a public-private partnership with money that will be provided mostly by the European Union.

In a few years, cities will have smart elements even in the most unexpected places, such as street lights that will turn on only if they detect people, or where garbage cans will warn when they are full to be collected. There will also be fewer cars in cities because they will be shared, and traffic lights may even be dispensed with because all cars will be connected to each other.

In 2025 it will be possible to start using

By 2025 , Spain will lead Europe in road technology, where full 5G coverage is expected in urban areas, highways and rail lines . These types of measures give meaning to new regulations such as the prohibition of emergency triangles as of January 1, 2026, where the new V-16 light, which can be used from next July, will include a geolocation system and which will inform the cloud of its position. The cranes will also communicate the location of the vehicle, and if there are works, it will have to be detailed between which kilometer points they are located.

The first cities with smart roads in Spain will be Madrid, Malaga, Vigo and Gerona . In Vigo, a traffic management system is being prepared, where a green traffic light can be set to make way for an ambulance. In Gerona, autonomous driving will be tested on a 34-kilometer stretch between the Fornells and Vilademuls toll roads.

In short, all these innovations for the DGT online will allow us to circulate in a safer and more reliable way thanks to the app, and that same infrastructure will allow smart cars to know all the possible information about the roads to make decisions.
